A member named Lebel has a thread in the Milsurp forum discussing the Cooey Carcano, it includes this photo of a circa 1931 Eaton's Catalogue. One can see it is the cheapest centerfire rifle, $12.95 delivered. They also have reconditioned Winchester and Remington 44/40's for $15.75, a Savage 99 would run $43.50, this was at a time when a man would work hard all day for a dollar. I'm not saying it's definative, but $12.95 is a lot easier sell than $140. One can also see the limited options in ammo.
I fondly remember the fine family suppers my Grandmother would cook up and after supper listening to my Dad, his Brothers and my Grandfather reminiscing on their hunting, before the war, in the 1930's. . The family Remington sxs put a lot of pheasants and ducks on their table.
Winchester levers is what they used for deer and moose, in those days, in calibers 30 WCF, 38-55 Winchester and the big hitter was the 45-90. . They were quite partial to the 38-55 and recell that mentioned frequently. The 30 WCF and the 38-55 are gone, as well as the Remington sxs, but, I still have the 1886 in 45-90 built in 1889.
