What WON'T a Mosin Nagant Kill?

Nothing on legs in North America. Outside of a zoo.

Or, if you ask a few guys I know, whitetail deer outside of 50 yards. 300 win mag is minimum for them ya know!

I'm not sure if I'd take a Mosin as my first choice for hunting Grizzly/Polar Bears, but for everything from Deer to Moose, the x54r is more than enough cartridge.

Actually, I took my mosin deer hunting with 230 grain soft points and got some flak for having too much gun.

I'll probably make a post and give a picture, but the Exit hole, once the deer was skinned was the size of both of my Fists put together.

LOL... you should come to my part of the country. If you don't have a Browning with a detachable mag in either .300 WM or 7MM your considered an "amateur".

I took a deer with 8mm Mauser and it blew their minds.

At least. Know a guy that said his 7-08 wouldn't kill the deer he shot at at 200 yards. Had to use a 300wm. He wing out looking for coyotes last winter with another friend and had to have his 300wm again. I think he would use it on gophers as well.

Best answer by far.....

7.62x54 is right up there in the 30.06/303 Brit/308 Win range. Good enough for anything on this continent and most of the stuff on all the other ones. Probably wouldn't be my first pick if I ever went hunting the bigger bears or buffalo/bison but it's fairly versatile. I know the 200 grain soft points pack a significant wallop. Nice thing is the Mosin can be quite accurate, I'll take a Lee Enfield or P14/17 over it for quick cycling and handling though.

Funny....the guy i was thinking of when I wrote that lives in Regina.......he told me my 7mm-08 might be okay for shooting "really small deer if they're under 100 yards" then asked why I would buy such a small gun when I could have bought a magnum.

That's funny.....round my neck of the woods even the old magnums won't kill deer anymore. 'Short mag'.....'short mag'.....all I ever fricken hear....I just snagged a 35 Whelen yesterday, I'm sure it'll make for some wide eyes.

A communist.

They are optimized for fascists and capitalists.

Actually IIRC history shows us they killed just as many communists.

Stalin liked to replace his Generals every so often as well as anyone that showed up on his paranoid megalomaniac radar...oh and millions in the Ukraine as well.

Blow their minds and point out the Boone and Crocket record trophy buck in Canada was taken with a .308 and the US B&C record trophy buck was taken with a 25/20, lol.

Seeing as the .44 magnum has been successfully used to take all of the big game, both here and in Africa from
a revolver, it's a safe bet that in the hands of a well experienced hunter, the 7.62X54r can do the job on any
land critter.:)

I wouldn't worry about it taking down anything we have in North America with one. A lot of fellas seem to over think a simple tool for the job.

While it does outpace the 308 Winchester, most of the old military cartridges have pretty similar capabilities.
