I am going to make a stock for my .270 and was wonderingif anuone had any recomendations on what wood I could use. I have a piece of Black Wallnut that is the right size (3"x9"x48"). Would this handle the recoil?

That lumber was used for the most powerful firearms made, so yes.:D
Gotta check for weak areas in the wood , in around the pistol grip, action area. Knots , rot, cracks etc. :)

The piece I have is perfectly clean with a straight grain running the length. I originally chose this piece for table legs.

Just straight grain isn't always the best... especially when you get into the grip area.. grain that slopes down through the grip is better.

Slightly upward grain through the forend is best...

How you lay this stock out on your blank is quite important.

i made a stock out of Black cherry for my buddy's little brothers .22 i should get him to take some pictures of it, it looks nice. i did a grip cap and but plate out of dark walnut then finished off with tung oil. its alot of work it was the first one i ever made but it was fun
