Guys,
I need to identify this wood. Anybody has an idea what is it called?

This is a stock from a Browning lever action rifle. According to Browning website, this model comes with walnut stock... but this hardly looks like walnut to me.

That is Walnut -ie very nice walnut.
You take what you get when you cut a tree up .
I jsut redid a old cooey and when the stock was
cleaned up and refinished, it looked like that, should have taken a picture of it .

Gentlemen, I beg to differ. I'm a cabinet maker/carpenter with 35 years in the trade, and to my eye, it looks like wood from the mahogany family. The japanese manufactured Brownings, like my buddy's .308 BAR, use this wood as they would have to import black walnut from north america. Most of the imported black walnut is turned into veneer stock to get the maximum dollar value out of it, and used in the high end automotive industry. I'd have to do more research to find out exactly what kind of wood it is, but it isn't black walnut. Anyone else?

Hey I have been a custom cabinet maker for 22 years and I am still learnig about dirrerent species! Great piece you have, does it really matter the tru nature of the wood?Wrong way wood ,haha, be the guy to know since he is a wood specialist! My grandfather said a very wise thing that still sticks to this day!"When you think you know everthing and stop learning, time is up, your dead!

Some of the Browning Japan stocks I have fixed and refurbished, had the most awfull wood hiding under a real nice camaflauge finish! Mostly junk hardwood species, even cheaper than good Beechwood!

Too heavy.

Is this Stock Mahogany too?

Now that one for sure IS walnut, and with a very nice figure I may add. As to the stock that started this thread, it is positively a mahogany family wood. It may quarter cut sapele, it could be andiroba, or even quilted maple, but without seeing a blank or talking to Browning, it's hard to be sure. As to the suitablity of mahogany as a stock wood, no, it's not too heavy. Many of the philippine made Squires Bingham rifles have mahogany family stock wood. There! My 2 cents worth!

Take off the buttplate and scape a bit, then sniff. To my eye, this is a good walnut and should have that smell, the other possibility would be a mahogany which smells completely different. Once you know, relax, that is premium wood.
