What would some of our worst groups look like?

long ago and far away

i had a Navy Arms .44 capnball which wouldn't hit the proverbial barn door at 15 yds and I had to close in to 7 to find out it was shoot 2 feet high and right of sighting point. Group? What group?

I wish I had taken some of the groups produced by my M14. Then again, I'd have had to stand so far back that I don't know if you could have seen the holes in the paper!

Here's my worst group, This is a 8x11 target, shot at 100yrds, the day after I got my new rem. 700 7-08. factory federal 150's. There were 8 shots fired......but only 7 hit.......barely!!! Needless to say I was not happy to have a day old gun shot this way!!

Before I learned how to mount a scope, or how to shoot, I'd be happy if more than a couple shots hit the paper.

Today, load testing, my worst group was 1.6" at 100y. It was all me, that one, one flyer one way, one flyer the other. The middle, was a nice 1 hole with three bullets through it :bangHead: Thankfully, I had a load that was better than the 3 in the middle, so I didn't need to concern myself with what might have been.

My remington700P .308 shoots federal 150 grain factory ammo about the same. With handloads, I have shot numerous 5 shot groups in the .3-.4 range at 100 using sierra 168 matchkings. Loading makes all the difference in a 700.

"Worst group?" I was expecting some mention of a large group of weight-watchers at barbeque and makeup night. It may be that one of those staccato - rapping, over - emoting, social - misfit music groups would beat them in the finals though, for generating sheer repugnance, untempered by the sympathy one might feel for the first group.

A poor 800m group

This past Sunday, I had two good shoots at 900m, a good shoot at 800m, and a bad shoot at 800m. Here is the plot of my bad 800 group.

No idea what happened, everything looked good, but the shots landed where they landed and I simply ended up with a big group:

The grid squares are one minute. The group height is about 2.8 minutes, from the lowest to the highest shot. The group is about 3.2 minutes wide, there was some wind blowing that day, with some modest variations.

A good shoot would have the height of the group just a bit bigger than the size of the V-bull (the innermost ring). A great shoot would be a group height slightly smaller than the V-bull ring.

My two sighters scored a "V" and a "4". My ten on score were 5 5 5 4 V 5 5 4 4 4 4, for a score of 45-1V. A good score for the day would be in the range of a 49-4v to 50-6V.

Yeah, it shot my 150 handloads alittle better, it shoots 140's awesome!!!:D The problem with the first day at the range with the new gun was that the barrel was touching the stalk about 2 inches back from the front on 1 side, shaved her off and all is good!!

Went to the range once with a buddy and something minor had happened to his rifle and he was very concerned about it.

He started talking shots hoping his rifle would group well, it is a BLR that doesn't group well at the best of times. I would throw a couple of my own rounds in his target just to get him excited. First time we went to check, I could see the strain on his face at the bad flyers. He never said a word, but he was sweating

New target up and I kept doing teh same things, one high right one low left. His guts were just churning he was so nervous, so wound up he didn't once comment that there were extra holes on his target. I don't think he ever did notice.

I told him in the end what I had done, had a great laugh at his expense.

They were likely his worst groups

I like that. I have a buddy that always gets worked up to the max when his rifle doesn't shoot just so. I'll try that with him and watch for a response.
