What would WWII Medics Carry?

I spoke to an actual WW2 veteran medic at the old Toronto Military, where I had a Bren and sten display.

He came over and started talking to me about the sten.

He stated he used to carry on in his truck. He said something about the fact he wasnt supposed to carry one but they the germans were not also supposed to be doing a lot of things.

He said there were lots of times it was just him and a buddy out in the woods looking for injured barely any support, stuff like that.

Sounded like a brave guy,

German SS were not adverse to shooting POW's or medic's..

Medics and Doctors in the CF are issued both sidearm and rifle. Learned that when I read a book titled "FOB Doc". Written by a CF doctor in Afghanistan. Well worth the read!

The SS didn't give a rats ass about the Geneva Convention, the Wehrmacht however usually abided by it.

When I first got to Afghanistan, a friend of mine who's a medic said to me "I just loaded up all of my mags with live ammo. That's never happened before." Medic or not, I wouldn't go out there without a rifle.

Some comments here make the HP sound like a much superior weapon to the Webley 455.

I have one of each. I think both are excellent examples of a miltary pistol and revolver. the webley looks ugly and uncomfortable, but in fact feels much better in the hand than a Colt or S&W 455 revolver. I have those, too.

The Webley is built like a tank and I am sure 100% reliable. I would prefer to carry the HP, but sure would not feel under-armed if I was issued the Webley.

I am a bit puzzled by the caliber 455. It seems a bit weak compared to the 45 Colt or 45 ACP, which were contemporaries.

But, compared to the 38 S&W which the Brits also issued, it is a power house. Now there is a crock of a cartridge.

I'm thinking (if at all) a .380 Enfield No.2 Mk.I*

Depends if he was in the Canadian or British army....Canadian's had acess to the Smith&Wesson "Victory" revolver, chambered in the 38/200,..where as the Brit's used either the Enfield or Webley revolver,..the Smith&Wesson was more popular, due to its better trigger in double action,..vs the Enfield with the hammer modification...you could only fire it double action....not very accurate to shoot...
