I am just curious to know if YOU had a budget of 1500$ for a precision rifle, what you'd buy/build...no scopes/bipod/anything, just gun...you don't need to spend the whole amount, but you can't go over it

please, let's not turn this into a remi/savage/etc thread :ar15:, just curious if you had 1500$ what you'd end up with...now that you know what you know

I'm a newb and from what I've been reading in the last few month, I am leaning towards a remi 700 SPS, new barrel and a new trigger, and curious to see if there's any options I have not considered...I know I gotta work on me the most, but I don't mind spending the money now to get something I won't regret in 2-3 years

There is such a huge advantage of a custom target rifle action, I would buy a used target rifle.

The action is a single shot, so the entire bottom is bedded. It probably has 3 actions crews - not 2. It is thicker walled - very stiff.

It has an excellent trigger.

It has a quality stock.

It has a custom chambered top quality barrel.

These sell for about $1,500, and are ready to go, out of the box.

All it would need is a new paint job.

A good target action runs $2500 to $3,500

A good barrel id around $500

A good chambering job and barrel installation runs around $200

A good trigger costs around $200

A good pillar bedding job costs around $200

Don't let my wife see this....

700 SPS Varmint used in 22-250 or 243 or 308 $600
B&C vertical grip stock $250
new barrel in _____ $650

5R milspec in .308. A good scope and quality rings, some Federal Gold 168 and you're ready to go. If the stock doesn't fit you, you'll be able to get a fair amount for it and upgrade. All while remaining within your budget.

Yes I also have custom rifles with high priced barrels. But those are generally very specific rifles and often weigh a lot more than the 5R or are single shot. For an all around very accurate rifle right out of the box I'd go with the 5R. My experience with them has been that they shoot sub .5 moa with ease and without reloading.

You should be able to find one for $1200 new. Spend the rest on good rings and glass.

I hear the Savage rifles also shoot very well, and are also available with good stocks. The system they use is neat in the fact that you can change the barrels yourself. Unfortunately I've never liked the overall feel or fit/finish on them so I've avoided them. However this is a personal choice and you may not agree. Definitely worth a look/consideration.

A full custom at this point is more than your budget. Even just replacing the barrel with a match grade one will take a big chunk out of your budget. Frankly my luck with the 5R barrels hasn't made me want to change them at this point. The other 5R owners I know have had the same results. This rifle doesn't qualify as a regular production rifle since it is a non cataloged item. If you decide it's not for you, it's also easy to sell.
