What would you guys buy if you wanted a rimfire and had 1000 bucks to spend. .17HMR, 22WMR. And what make and model. The new sako quads are nice. Anyone familiar with this make.

I would wait however much longer you would have to so you can save up and buy a cooper.

CGN Sponsor Prophet River gets them in from time to time. You are basically looking at 1 hole groups with these beautiful rifles.

$1000.00 is an area where there are few choices
Sako Quad is a very nice gun and you can swich out the barrels to have some variety in your rimfire shooting

The Weatherby XXII is likely the best buy for that money seeing as it comes with an Anschutz action, and a real nice stock.

$1600.00 gets you into a nice used Anschutz

You could look at buying 2 CZ rifles, a 17HMR either American of Varmint. P&D in Edmonton just received a huge shipment of CZ rimfires, there must be 25 pieces of each model. It was kind of neat to see a complete pallet full of CZ rimfire rifles. FS

Get a CZ in .22. Do trigger job if you have to. Get a good piece of glass and a set of mounts. Use it for gophers or do some impromptu target shooting or take it to a silhouette match. Far more versatile than either 17 or 22mag.
The CZs on average are more consistent than many others in the same price range. Find some ammo that shoots well in the gun and shoot lots. Cheers

CZ 453 Varmint in .17hmr or Sako Quad in either one you will not be disappointed in.

I would certainly get an Anschutz ( used) and spend a few dollars on a good scope and the balance in ammo. Then head for the gopher fields and shooting ranges. the Anschutz will retain its value if you wish to upgrade or change calibers.

We've got a few Anschutz coming that won't be much more than $1000 brand new! :)

We've got two Coopers in .22 Mag and two in 17 HMR in stock now.

I'd agree with you BabySeal.
I bought a TRP#3 and it is very nice.
I'd love a wood stocked Cooper 22 also.
Buy once...cry once

what would you buy

For even under 1000 i would get the Magnum Research semi auto 17hmr.It is very accurate and can shoot 9 rounds rounds out of the magazine as fast as you can pull the trigger.alot more fun than a 4 shot bolt action, you will shoot alot more gophers than your buddy with the bolt action.I bought one and it is a lot of fun to shoot my kids love the gun.The gun takes rugers 22mag 9 shot magazines.mine jammed a coulpe times at the start but hasn't jammed since, and as for the 17hmr well it is a very explosive round no gopher is going to run away after being hit.

Used Anschutz and a decent scope gets my vote. Also get it in 22lr. If you've got a decent scope with enough adjustment range and repeatability it'll do almost as much as the more expensive rimfire calibers, plus you can then play the Silhouette game with it.

Personally I don't see a point in the .17 rimfires, or even the .22WMR. For that price you could just shoot a very light centerfire and be done with it. The accuracy will be higher and the cost similar or less if you reload.
Cheers,
Grant

As lowe160 says buy a .17 and a .22 mag in a savage, very accurate reliable guns. Then take the $400. you have left over and buy shells or beer with it.
