I'm debating on going to one calibre for a scoped rifle, and an open sighted rifle. These would be for big game in Ontario. I have a couple of ideas, but haven't chose one yet. What calibre would you choose, and why?

Imo Winchester model 70 270 wsm scoped. I have the sporter and its a tack driver everybody wants to shoot it. I have not reloaded for it yet but I'm sure id get better results.

Browning blr in 270wsm pistol grip.Great for the bush and almost as accurate as a bolt action

If your on a budget the rifles on tradex are a great deal there a sponser here.
 
Best overall 308 Scout Rifle like a Steyr very accurate on the peep sight, scopable in seconds with a pre-sight 3X9X40 mounted with Leopold Qwick release, accurate and powerfull and very light rig... JP.
 
I'd say 350 rem mag in a model 673 remington guide gun cause its a good all around bush to med range rifle and cal combination.

My suggestion would be a BLR and a Ruger 77 all weather, both in 308 Winchester.
Sounds like a novel idea. The problem is, some areas you can't use the 308 for varmints.
Let us know what you decide.
 
I'd go for a 'scoped 6.5x55 of good quality. Why? it's an "all-round" cartridge. Accurate, not much recoil. Lots of variety in bullet weights/design.

Open sights - a Ruger No1 in .45-70. Why? It looks great! Can be loaded to African game levels if you want to.
 
700 nitro express if your going to be hunting deer.

Might want to upgrade to a 120 mm smoothbore cannon if your hunting moose.

On a more serious note, the .30-06 is a great all around rifle for Ontario big game. I've taken moose, deer, and bear with it with great success at ranges as close as 5 yards and as far as 300 yards.
 
Depends on a whole bunch of things - where are you hunting, and what for? How comfortable are you with recoil? Do you shoot much? Do you reload?\

If you're looking for something light, not much recoil, but will take any game in Ontario, 7mm/08 comes to mind. If you're going after moose, use a premium bullet. You could also use it for coyotes, it's light, minimal recoil, not too much noise. Pick one up in a Savage or remington and a half decent scope, it would be hard to beat.

Pretty well anything in a 30 cal would be great too. If you're going to concentrate on moose, though, a .338 is awesome, but not everyone can shoot one without flinching. Another thing you could consider is one of the rifled barrel/shotty combo's. Accurate out to 100+ yards, can be used anywhere in Ontario, and you swap barrels out for birds or Spring turkey.
 
I would say a Rem 700 or Ruger Hawkeye in 35 Whelen. Have sights installed with quick release rings, and a Leupold VXII 2-7 or 3-9 CDS scope. Load it up with the 225gr Accubonds or Barnes TSX (my fav) and kill anything you want. Recoil is mild, yet hits like a freight train. Just my opinion......

I'll agree with this, but I'd opt for a 7600 Carbine w/ a VX3 1.5-5 & 225gr bearclaws.:D

For one gun the choice is not so much the round you want to fire but the gun itself. 300 wm, 30-06, 270 and so on.... Any of the common hunting rounds will bring home anything in this country. All you need is to tailor the ammo to the intended purpose.

Shop for a rifle that fits you and that you CAN SHOOT WELL !!! A 300 wm is awesome but if you are scared of it it is useless. ( Forget the macho crap about magnums)Buy the best quality your budget can handle. My only suggestion is to get a bolt action with a detachable mag. I find that a great feature for a hunting gun.
