The point is that you are not going to get match accuracy by throwing your loads together in an hour and a half. If you want the performance of Lapua ammo it is cheaper to buy it than it is to try and copy it, if you value your time. If on the other hand you have an obsessive personality and the patience of a dead man, you can make some pretty accurate ammo.
True dat
The maker has alot to do with the price I am willing to pay. Winchester is at the bottom. Federal and a few others, maybe 30$s a box. For the better stuff, like Lapua, Sako etc, I pay what is asked, but usually figure on 40$s a box by the time some tax is tossed on it.
I look at it this way what is my requirement and what level of accuracy do I need.
If I am in a match and need top accuracy I would be willing to spend $40 before taxes on a box of match ammo. It has to have proven to work in my rifle.
If I need minute of deer ammo that functions reliably and does what it's supposed to I am not expecting to pay for then $30
And I have, my rifle performed to match expectations with Norma Diamond line (before i started handloading) I purchased a large quantity of the Norma that cost allot more then the standard rounds with no regrets
Ok the reason I'm asking is because I may have the chance to import a large quantity of match ammo, at an excellent price, for resale.I need to know whether to base my margins on quantity or regular retail margins. So yeah...not useless info. Thanks to those that have contributed something worthwhile so far.
I have been paying somewhere around $46? plus tax for a box of Federal matched 175 gr. HPBT .308 and getting kinda sick of it. Gettin' ready to start shooting that inexpensive Winchester stuff from Canadian Tire...
I bought Lapua ammo and I love them, Like the .308 subsonic 200gr are $50 a box and the .308 AP 170gr ones are $240 a box of 20 . very accurate out of a 26" barrel. You get what you pay for.
Metou is talking AP, which isn't sold to the public by the Lapua distributor, Hirsch Precision. Lapua prices were posted earlier, but most of my posts have been deleted.
How could sixfold price difference be justified, AP or not? It might be a moot question, though, since companies will charge as much as they can if they feel that customers see that much value in the product, regardless of how much it's really worth.
Offtopic: Redman, do you know how AP is made? Prices are justified by audit rights under contract. Margins are low on this product.
This is military business, so will end my input on AP.
OK, I'll close the off-topic with saying that my understanding is that AP ammo has a penetrator core inside the copper jacket (hard steel, maybe tungsten-carbide?) and more propellant. Didn't know the profit margins were that low, but I'm shocked that it's that expensive.
I tried a lot of .308win, best for the money is Hornady Match 168gr BTHP moly, $25 a box of 20.
Offtopic: I have IMI .308 150.5gr in AP cost $2 a round and the core is TUNGSTEN. The Lapua are Unknown, until I get more to open one up
