Okay, so I have a limited budget and really can't figure out what I wanna do with my Norc. Curious what all of you would do in my situation.

Feel free to gimme other ideas that I haven't even considered! But keep it within the $300-ish ball park :p

I'm really leaning towards leaving the stock barrel length and installing a new smith enterprises US Coast Guard flash hider and a tritanium front sight .. but I'm definatly open to any other options!

I know this has been asked before but what's the big deal about the fibreglass stock? Just the weight savings?

Buy the proper usa parts and you won't have a fiberglass bill to put the chicom gun in a us glass stock. costs.....$6.00. don't bother to fill in the selector hole. spend the money on ammo and learn to shoot. I left my gun "stock" and it still works over 10 years later.

Huh ?!?

I try never to post after I get into the whiskey.

I'm very happy with the way both of my rifles shoot with the full length barrels. I changed stocks on both, a walnut on one and a gi fg stock on the other. My only beef is with the added length of the flash suppressor. Its a bit of added hindrance in the bush. Someone needs to make a dummy suppressor that is set back on the barrel so far that all it does is protects the muzzle crown and makes it look like the barrel was shortened. I do like the look and features of the USCG muzzle brake, I only wish it didn't add so much length either. A reamed out M16 Smith brake would be even better, but lacking sight provisions you'd be back to your gas lock sight. But in my case it would go on the scoped rifle.

I put an AR15 A2 flash eliminator on mine. only adds about 1.5" to the barrel and cuts muzzle rise a little.
And by having the muzzle threaded 1/2"x28 if I want to go back tot he stock FE all I have to do is make a new castle nut.

under 100.00 .... have yer original flash suppressor bored out, tapped to 1/2 x 28...... chop yer barrel.... thread same..... install with crush washer..... spend rest of money = 200.00 on - garand rear sight, usgi or wolf spring, nm guide rod (sadlak) and usgi m14 or garand hammer .
this can all be accomplished for under 300.00

i'd prefer to get the real things out of the safe again-but given the norc, just change the rear sight, and put the usgi fiberglas stock or better on it- as to what's the difference, if you ever pick up a real thing or put a usgi fiberglas on your norc, you'll see instantly the diff instantly- the usgi is far more thinner, feels better, and mounts better- the norc stocks are "clubby" like a competition rifle stock, and then there's the issue of that soft wood- like the diff between a fine kentucky muzzeloader and a double sxs shotgun- the cheap ones with the beavertail forend

Here at the Wet Coast M-14 support group, we provide a chop saw and a receiver/barrel wrench set up as part of the seminars. A very large percentage of the attendees want to shorten the barrels .... especially after they see and handle a few of the shorties we generally have around for show and tell. The M-14 simply balances much better with a shorter barrel.

As for the Vortex FH, we have several shorties with this setup, mostly because DLASK has them available locally, in stock, at a great price. Personally, I prefer the DLASK shorty Muzzle Brake over the Vortex [ I am not TACTICOOL any more, so flash suppression is NOT high on my list of accessories, however, recoil reduction - AND faster double taps - certainly make my "must have" list ].

Personally, I prefer a folding stock [ see the FAQs ] and don't have much good to say about the Gas Lock Front Sights [ aside from the fact that they are easy to install ].

the M-14 is a great rifle, whatever the configuration, but a shorty 14 in a folding stock is in a whole different class.

This probably your best option, but I suggest a non-tritium NM front sight and a USGI synthetic stock.

I have one of my SEI M21A5/C-IED rifles configured similar to what is described above.
The other is set up as an E2 EBR.

Yep you said it.

I'd bed the original stock, and shoot the thing.
Any modifications would be from the Hungry school of minimal expenditure gunsmithing.
