I have a Sako L61R Finnbear Drluxe. What would you fine people recommend for optics?

A VARI X III 1.5 -5 x 28MM, VARI X III 1.75-6E X 32MM, or a A VARI X III 2.5-8 X 36MM? Or something else?

Thanks. :)

the 375 has roughtly the trajectory of a 30-06. So whatever you consider appropriate for a 30-06 should also do for the H&H. Personally, I like 3-9's and 4-12's (for the AO)

Burris Safari LRS 1.5-6 with the fast plex is going on mt 375 Ruger,.

For in close or bush hunting a 1.5X5 or thereabouts and for more open and odd close shot a 2.5X8. Had both on my rifle in Afrika and figure the 2.5X8 is the perfect all around scope for 375.

I have a 2.75X Burris Scout Scope on mine, but I had a custom quarter rib made for the purpose of mounting the intermediate eye relief scope.

I used a M-70 .375 with a 2.5-8X Leupold in Africa, and found it to be a convenient size, and even at 8X had acceptable eye relief. Set at low power, the rifle could be brought into action very quickly, but it would certainly be the highest magnification I would want on a .375.

The only problem with a very short scope like a 1.5-5X, is that you might need extension rings to bridge the magnum length action. When it comes to mounting a conventional scope, particularly a variable with a long ocular bell, I would use an extension rings anyway so that the scope could be mounted in such a way that the ocular lens did not extend past the cocking piece of the rifle.

I would consider a scope mount from Brockman that features a pop up, ghost ring, which is locked down while the scope is in place. Considering what a .375 is called to do, I think iron sights are indispensable.

K98,
Out of the choices you listed I'd take the 2.5-8. My own .375s have a 3.5-10 VX111 and a 3-9 Diavari. The 1.75-6 would work, depending on which you value the most, a little more field of view on the bottom or a little more power on top. Any power under 3 is wasted on me, as I know that I will never use it, hence my choices.

I have both a Vari-XIII 1.5-5x20 and a VXIII 2.5-8x36, and have mounted the 2.5-8 on my Ruger RSM 375H&H. I selected this scope because I find the image brighter, a result of the larger objective lens, no doubt. However, if forced to use the 1.5-5x20, I would not feel disadvantaged in the slightest. Both scopes are reasonably compact, at least in relation to the action size.

As a matter of interest, the 2.5-8x36 requires an offset ring to mount on the RSM due to a short centre tube. The 1.5-5x20, on the other hand, while shorter overall, will fit with vertical rings. The picture below shows the relationship between the two scopes on the RSM.

Hah - wait till you get in the long grass with that buff in a couple of weeks! Then you'll appreciate the bottom end of that scope. Nothing like 40" swept back horns at 8' to get your attention.

I'm taking a .416 with a fixed 2.5x Heavy Duplex for that job. At least it will never accidently get left on 9.;) The irons are sighted for the 400 grain bullets as well. A .375 is coming along as a general hunting rifle, hence the general hunting scope.

I'm running with a 3-9 Burris Signature on my 378 for the time being. Mostly because I had one handy at the time, and (IMHO) they're one of the sturdiest scopes out there for handling obscene recoil. Plus, the 378 has the trajectory of a .270, and few will argue that a 3-9 is an excellent choice for a 270

I'm envious - wish I was going again this year. Oh well, my .375 is proving to be an adaquate ptarmigan gun.

To answer you question, it would help to know what terrain you will expect to be hunting in.

For close up and personal, I'd use the 1.5x5, but would not hesitate to use the 2.5x8 for on average longer shots hunting. I have all three scopes you mention and like them all. I'm tending to like the 1.75x6 best.

.

Well, thanks guys! :)

The dealer had all the scopes I'd mentioned used but he has them all sold except for the VARI X III 2.5-8 X 36MM in excellent condition for $445 so I thought I'd better grab that one while I still could. Considering I hunt both in the bush, and in the open a 1.75-6X or a 2-7X may have suited my purposes slightly better. If I really wanted too I could always take the 2-7X Redfield off my .270 and trade scopes but I've had deer jump up in the grass a few feet away so I don't think I'll bother.
