What would you use for a dream build ?

Probably just pick up a Tikka T3 in 257, 6.5x55, 260, .270, .280, 7m-08, etc., find the nicest lightest stock for it and toss on a Leopold VX-3i 4.5-14x50mm or similar light weight scope. Probably come out at about 2.5k if done well. Could custom barrel it for another 500-1000 but I'd shoot the factory one before I removed it.

Why build a lightweight and put a heavy scope on it?

Dream rifle

Already have my 2 dream/ideal hunting rifles.
A ruger compact magnum stainless, chambered in 300 rcm, outfitted with a McMillan stock and topped with a Burris signature safari 1.75-5x32.
The other is my ruger no. 1, chambered in 280 rem and topped with a Leopold vx2 2-7x33.
Both are excellent handy, fairly light rifles, perfectly suited for our hunting areas in central Ontario where there is a mixture of dense bush with the odd open meadow where you might get a 4-500 yard shot. The weather decides which one I take out for day.

I always wonder what's wrong with Cooper's because Prophet River has a ton of them on the used/consignment list. They are not mainstream rifles, so you wouldn't except so many of them being dumped on the same website. There has to be an issue with so many people dumping them, mostly near new condition.

They are generally heavier than I want.

Just looking for thoughts as to what components would you pick for a dream build hunting rifle.

Criteria: 1) Easy to carry relatively compact rifle capable MOA out to 400 yards for the usual Canadian game.

What would you pick ?

a) Action
b) cartridge that is not a big magnum
c) barrel ( make and contour)
d) Stock ( make and style)

Budget under 4K without scope.

T3x superlite, atlas worx metal, mcmillan edge stock, .30-06. <$3k

I could spend a lot of time looking at the English gunmakers, the Austrian and German ones and the Italian ones. I`m thinking Rigby Rising bite, built with hammers, in 450-400NE and 6.5x57R, probably a Fanzoj hammer singleshot in 6.5x57R, maybe a Beretta hammer in 12 and 20, wouldn`t mind an H&H underlever Rook rifle in something like a 327Federal and maybe even a 44mag. And probably a Steven 44-1/2 in 32-40win.

The only thing I would change about this is the scope would be a 40mm. I've gone the custom route a few times and never get it right.

Realistically something like this:

https://www.maynardsfineart.com/auction-lot/kimber-8400-montana-bolt-action-rifle_7CB4AD8974

with the 3300 dollars in savings I could afford to set the sights back and trim the barrel to 20 inches. Trijicon 1-6

Or an octagonal barrel contour on a m98 action in a walnut stock, maybe some sort of rib.

I imagine if I did a build in that price in a more classic style I would sink quite a bit of money into things like sights, swivels, grip caps, case hardening etc. The money would not go nearly as far as I would like if I took this route but day dreaming is fun.

If I have to conform to thread rules, a kimber short action, or m7 stainless with a sporter contour 20 inch barrel in 358 win.

That rifle was a steal, the sight work alone cost $4-500. I did a similar build on my 338 WM Montana, except mine had a 21 inch barrel and a banded ramp sight. God knows why I sold it.

You need to give some direction as to what kind of rifle you have in mind.

- Classic blued with walnut or stainless/synthetic.

Mik:

Right? Essentially a free Montana you pay for the sights.

Iirc you posted your build on cgn or someone did something similar. I had done the same with a tikka t3 in 338 but sold it in a moment of weakness

I think a gent that guided for Ardent posted his rifle in a thread, I got the idea from him. I don't recall his username.

I'm tempted to do the same with my 30-06 Montana, maybe with a pop up peepsight if I could ever locate one. That's pretty much my dream rifle.

For that $ I think I would go on Tradex and grab the 12g over 7x57 Simpson with the set trigger on the rifle and top it with a classic low power Swarovski . Do almost anything with that combo.
