I’ve got an itch to buy a truck / wheeler / walking gun. Something that doesn’t take too much room but works for plinking, smashing the odd coyote, bagging a deer if the opportunity presents itself or deterring a bear or moose if I end up in a bad situation. Unfortunately in New Brunswick the only caliber you can carry pretty much all year is .224 or less. I’d like something light-ish, probably in .223/5.56 (I’m set up to reload for the caliber), preferably with a wood or laminate stock, and with iron sights. I’m leaning hard towards a Gunsite Scout (if I can find one) but I’m curious what else could fit the bill.
What would you use for an all-round gun?

CZ527 in a synthetic stock to "smash around" or a nice walnut stock.
I read your post on your CZ527. They do seem like nice little rifles. I’ll have to see if I can fondle one somewhere to see what I think. Too bad they don’t take AI mags. I have several for another .223 of mine. I’ve also been very tempted to pick one up in 7.62x39 and a box of surplus ammo for cheap plinking.

I prefer the CZ over the Ruger and 7.62x39 over 223. The 527 mags are nice quality single stack units. I bought a spare mag and couldn't be happier. Total keeper.

It's not worth a flaming war. I just think the CZ is built to a higher standard. But Rugers are usually very good guns.
I generally grab my Henry 30-30 when I just want a gun to throw in and bring scouting or plinking or woods bumming , an all around gun so to say.
I also hunt with it too and it just seems to fit any scenario short of the zombie apocalypse or taking down a grizzly bear.
9 times out of ten I think “what should I take” and automatically grab the 30-30 and 60% of the time it works every time lololol

I wonder too about a Browning BLR. I’ve never owned a lever gun but I’ve held one and it felt very nice.
Edit: I just noticed on the Browning website that the .223 BLR has a 1/12 twist rate. Pretty useless as far as I’m concerned. I much prefer .223 bullets in the 69-80gr range.

Love my little CZ. One deer so far with a spine shot , 123 gr reload. Does excellent with cast 150 gr bullets also.

... I was also going to say a nice light Henry Carbine in 30-30 would be about perfect, if you like levers.
For NB, I would choose any good bolt action 22-250, shooting the heaviest bullet available, with a low power scope.

There may be a change in that law here in NB this year. It was supposed to happen last year but the covid put the kiebosh on that.
I'm not current on further details. I'd do some research if I wanted to buy something larger than a 22cf.
