Hopefully this is the right place to post my question I have; if not, please move me.

My grandfather joined the Canadian Forces shortly after D Day; he was too young before then to follow his older bothers over. He was sent oversees shortly after Germany surrendered from what I was told; he never talked about it and I only have his minimal records that my grandmother gave me after he died (nobody else in the family seemed to care).

I was thinking of buying a Longbranch, but I was hoping to buy one from the year he may have been issued. I know nothing anyone can tell me would probably be cast in stone, but I thought maybe somebody would have an idea on theissue years compared to the deployment years. Would anyone have any insight for me?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

It would be almost impossible to say what year regardless of when he joined except for at the beginning of the war. Rifles picked up from dead soldiers would be issued again.

LB rifles were made from 1941 thru 1945 and early manufacture rifles existed in the inventory throughout the war. So its possible that anyone who joined late in the war and served thru to VE Day could have been issued a rifle from any of the years from 1941 thru 1945.

That is pretty much what I thought; I was kind of hoping to be proven wrong though (don`t let my wife hear that). I guess I will just keep an eye out for a good Longbranch and pick that up.

It's not even certain he would have been issued a Long Branch rifle.

Now that's a distinct possibility...
Amongst a number of different manufactured Enfields, he may of handled a Sten or a Bren as well..Find a nice 1945 Long Branch to start with....At least you can shoot that...:)
