what you think of the 30-06 cal

I agree, anyone with a handle on high school math can see the advantage of the 7mm bullet for military service, although the .30 gave us a better hunting round IMHO. Neither do I understand why the Germans, who already understood the advantages of the 7mm projectile from a battle rifle, chose a .318, then a .32.

Hi

I believe they were worried about armor. They seemed to have convinced themselves that an 8 mm was more effective on troops under cover, or on lightly armored targets.

What is exactly the hard evidence behind the 7mm being better than the 30cal.? Im not saying its not better but i want to see this math you speak of to prove it?

Hi

The simple quick answer is to take a look at the ballistic coefficient of bullets in the 150 to 170 grain range. For the same basic bullet design, the smaller caliber will give you a better BC at the same weight.

In most cases they look at equivalent recoil energy. That means same bullet weight and velocity or something pretty close to it.

here is what my 30-06 can do at 300 meters, if I do my part

30-06300m.jpg

that is loaded with 168 grain Nosler HPBT match bullets in Lapua brass and IMR 4831 powder. and that is with a fixed 6x scope! :D

In the same vein, a few years ago I shot 594/600 at Connaught in the F Class ISSF 300 meter match where you shoot 60 rounds on score in 90 min. (or less) time. The 10 ring measures one MOA and some.

I was using a Rem 700 with wood stock glass and pillar bedded with a simple Harris bipod on, and rear bag behind.

Barrel is a 29 in. Ted Gaillard (Sendero profile but unfluted) and the pill was 155 SMK pushed by H4350.

But If you want to shoot F Class F category ( Palma) you have to use the .308 Win. cartridge by definition.
