what your go to long range .223 round

For me anything past 500 yards with a .223 is long range :)

My goal is too shoot out to 1000 yards and hit my 12x12 steel gong I made.

Stick with 80r and up. SMK's are easy to load for, but there are lots to choose from - most rifles like SMK's tho.
The trick is the powder - Varget or R15
Those will take you pretty far on a calm day!

Winchester brass weight sorted to .5gr spread, 24.8gr of varget, CCI br4, 80.5gr berger. Groups went from 1/2 minute to 1/3 minute at 300m when using the 80.5 instead of the 80gr vld. They're going 2950fps, and they have no problem holding 1/2 minute out to 1200 if conditions aren't choppy.

25gr Varget, 80gr VLD, Lapua brass, .020" off
Savage LRPV 26" extra heavy, 1:7.

23 gr. IMR 8208 XBR, with Hornaday 75 gr. HPBT.. Fed match primers if possible, and brass sorted by internal capacity.. VERY lightly crimped in a Lee die
