Whatever happened to James Pell's Ballard rifle.

The Battle of Eccles Hill is a very interesting, I have been studying it for a little bit and am just getting a handle on it now. An acquaintance of mine who volunteers at the Brome museum where the Westover rifle is on display had a chance to run a patch through the bore and the rifling is in pretty good condition despite what Charles Purdon's article suggests.

I trust that "running a patch" through such a historic artifact was immediately followed by a museum conservator's recommended metal preservative barrier layer?
 
I don't know, I would assume a patch with a bit of gun oil followed. I worked for a small museum as well and their firearms collection though catalogued did not get much attention, I suspect most small town museums are much the same.
