What's 10 cents worth in 1951?

Priceless!

for my love of hunting/fishing/shooting, I also collecting old hunting/fishing/shooting magazines/books...

Just got a comic book from 1951, and from the first page of the comic book, there are handwritten: " From mother 3-1-51 "

I feel glad for the boy (or girl) who received this comic book from his mom as a gift to his love for hunting/fishing.

I'm too young compare with the lucky boy who got this wonderful gift in 1951, and have no idea about how much 10 cents was worth that time, to me, it was priceless.

Any old timer here can tell me something about 1951 and any encouragement
from your folks ?

I well remember that a chocolate bar cost a nickel and a six bottles of coke was 36 cents. :)

That 82 cents/gal milk was delivered by a man using a horse-drawn wagon over the paved streets of cities, not the country. It was kept cold by blocks of ice and sawdust.

We got Coke and a bag of chips for 10 cents. Payphone and bus rides were each a nickel. A Saturday matinee in the local cinema was 12 cents. Two full lenth features cartoons and serial continued each week.
Live minnows were 5 or 6 dozen for a buck. we used to get night crawlers and trade some for minnows at the local boat livery. That's the marina/bait shop now.:D Picking crawlers on a golf course for a contractor earned you $3 a thousand.:eek: Farm work, picking tomatoes, tobacco etc earned about 40- 60 cents an hour. Cigarettes were 20-25 cents a pack.
The canadian dollar was worth more than the U.S.. I think the bait place charged 25 cents on the dollar. Boat rentals, no motor was 3-4 dollars a day.

Gasoline was 22-25 cents a GALLON. Wages in the auto plants were about 150-175 per hour. Model 94 win 30.30 went for about $50-60 new. In 1961 you could buy one in TO for $69

All you can eat fried chicken in a restaurant for $1.10. Black velvet whiskey was $3.65 a bottle.

OH yeah!!! the Coke we got......... it was brown and came in a bottle. We drank it.!!:cool:

I was 7 years old in 1951. I spent many days in the summers fishing in a boat from daylight till dark. I still remember the room moving as I sat on the bed at the end of a day on the water.:D Where the hell did the time go???

One of the things I remember well about that era was gasoline for many years in the 60's and even into the early 70's was 49.9 cents per imperial gallon. For the younger crowd that hasn't learned real measurement, that's 4.5 liters!
 
I remember when i could fill up my Dodge Charger and buy a case of beer for 10 bucks .
 
In some places in Manitoba in 1950 you could get 10 cents for a Gopher tail.
22 long rifle amo was .37 cents for a box of 50. I still have a box of them, hollow point and the price is stamped on the box.

I was 18yrs old and I remember waiting patiently for my subscription for Outdoor Life to arrive. The train would come into town and the mail was delivered every second Friday. Here's a copy of the first issue I received. Man, where has all the time gone......lol
