Whats a better choice , a fixed stock or a collapsable

This might seem like a newb question but its been bugging me for a while , I own a bushmaster ar 15, when I bought it , it came with 2 stocks , the A2 fixed stock and a collapsable 6 position stock... I cant decide witch one to go with , it seems like most people dont use the A2 stock, Is there a reason most guys are using some sort of collapsing stock, the rifle seems like it would be more accurate with the A2 stock,

With the collapsible stock you can adjust the length of pull for your body type so fit is typically better than a fixed stock unless of course the fixed stock is the exact length for your body type.
 
I find the A2 stock a little too long for my liking. A good solid collapsible stock like the Magpul CTR gives an ideal length of pull and still good support.
 
I like the A2 stock on my target rifles. It fits me, so it works well for me. For those needing adjustments I'd recommend the PRS for an accuracy rifle. Even the best of the adjustable light weight stocks can have a tiny bit of wiggle, which you really don't want in any dedicated accuracy rig.

For an all around rifle with a 16" or less barrel I prefer the Magpul CTR stock. It locks up decently but allows you to adjust the stock. This is even more helpful if you're changing around optics. Eotech, scope etc. You can adjust the stock so it's perfect for you. It's also a bit lighter which helps make the rifle feel even handier.

There are other choices and variations out there. It pretty much depends on what the rifle is set up to be used for.
 
It really doesn't matter, until you decide you have preference. I am assuming that your rifle functions fine with both (rifle vs carbine buffer?) If the A2 is too long for you, then go with collapsible. I have both on different rifles and run my collapsible at max extension. Basically the same length as my A2.

I like to A2 for my precision AR as it fits nicer on a rear bag, and I can slide the bag forward and back to give large adjustments in elevation. The collapsible doesn't work as well that way and unless the release handle is protected (MOE, CTR etc) you can actually release it with the bag and then your rifle can get short "unexpectedly"

The A2 also offers no wiggle, which I like for precision too. That being said, while I like the idea of a good locking collapsible stock, I am not ready to spend $$ on a Magpul upgrade for my CQB carbine yet. I don't think it will really increase my ability to hit the target very much (the nut behind the trigger needs more work than the rifle)

What are you using your AR for? Shooting from a fixed position or action sports like Service, CQB or 3-gun?
 
Do you take new shooters out to the range? The collapsible stock might be more useful for you if you do, even if the A2 fits you like a glove.
 
I much prefer a fixed A2 stock for when I run dry and have to resort to buttstroking my opponents....
HHmmmmm...now that I read this, someone might get the wrong (right?) impression..:redface:
 
Collapsing stocks are more versatile in terms of fitting the rifle to the user. The shorter length of pull available is also better suited to currently popular carbine technique.

Get a collapsable stock. You would be crazy to get something that you can't adjust to best suite your height and build, clothing, and which position you are shooting (standing, seated etc).
 
If the A2 stock feels comfortable for you on your AR, that's great. The advantage to the collapsible stock, as other have pointed out, is the ability to shorten the pull to match an individual's build, or preferred shooting style.

Another advantage of the collapsible stock is for those who use a longer pull, but then shoot with bulky or winter clothing, or while wearing body armour, all of which change the appropriate pull. The collapsible stock allows for a simple adjustment to compensate for such attire.

One size fits all ... usually doesn't. :)

A collapsible makes sense if you are required to wear body armour. Just having the collapsible stock gives you more options even if it never leaves the fully extended position. I personally have no need for it on range guns but some of mine do sport them. I find the A1 length stocks to be better than the longer A2 but everyone's different.

You move your stock for different positions?
That should go in the bad idea bin where it belongs, before it bites you.
 
well I have seen a collapsible break apart upon striking a dummy during bayo drills back in basic, while I do think the A2 would have faired better. But again I guess that goes back to your intended purpose :)
