What's a decent gun vice?

A standard 4" bench vise works well. I have an old record 4" swivel base that has been attached to my bench for 35 years.
Brownells sells an awesome polymer vise jaw pad that you cut to fit your vise for about $40.00.
Best investment I have made.

"...A standard 4" bench vise works well..." Yep. That's all you need with some pads for the jaws. 8 ounce leather makes a good pad. You'll need a solid bench too.

Heh heh. I too have had an old Record vice - a 5" one - bolted to my bench for the last (mutter mutter) years. I think it was Govt. surplus - has a broad arrow cast into it somewhere. I don't have the polymer pads (although I'm going to order some today), just a selection of softwood jaw pads and a couple with carpet glued to them.

I guess I was thinking more along the lines of the Tipton-type setups, or are these even worth having.

Maybe I've already got the best....
