what's a good 30-30 round

170grain Winchester grey box kills deer just fine. So do federals. And Remington. And hornady. Grab something 150grains and up, sight in, if you're happy with the accuracy, go hunting!

That's pretty much the ticket right there. Nothing too difficult about it.
 
hoytcanon has a single shot 30/30 and no doubt has some hot and fancy loads with pointed bullets that he gets good success with. Not usually recomended in a tube magazine where the point of one bullet is up against the primer of the one ahead of it.

However if you found that such a round shot vey good in your lever gun and extended your range and performed well on game, a person could hunt with one in the "spout" and one in the magazine and have a great little two shooter.
 
Too true Saskcop. keeping your shots in sure killing zone of the Cartridge should resolve in Rissoles for dayyyys.

Anything 170gr works well and should be readily available. The Hornady loads work really well and have a bit more velocity IMO, but the extra speed raises your point of impact and may not sight the same as conventional 30.30 loads.

I also have some "hot and fancy" loads for my .30/30 lever guns...
 
Just about any of the factory offerings in 170 grain bullet weight will work fine. The velocity range of the .30/30 is great for optimal bullet performance on thin skinned game. The Remington Corelokt, Winchester Power Point, Silver Tip and many others perform super as far as penetration and expansion go in my experience. Not so fast that bullets fail or so slow that they won't expand properly. Some claim the Silver Tip is a little slower to expand on light game but I've had good luck on deer with them.

I have a bunch of Leverevolution for my 30/30 Handi but I'm curious about reloading with Barnes TSX next.
Anyone do this with the 30/30?
 
Some were cutting the tips off to deem safe in a Tube mag.... as mentioned above. that's where the issue is with pointys an tube mags.

In terms of factory loads this thread begins and ends with Hornady 160gr LeverEvolution. They easily stretch the 3030s range to 200m plus, and brings larger game like moose into the fold with little issue. They point of impact will likely be significantly different then standard round nose soft points, as they have a higher velocity and pointed tip (safe for tube mags due to the rubber tip)

IMO the leverevolution stuff is for when you want to stretch your shot on an open field type place. Other than I would mostly load some federal fusion 170 or something like that - and keep a handful of leverevolution in my ammo box in case I hunt somewhere open.

The issue with that is the point of impact. With my Win 94 its one or the other, cant use both interchangeably.
