Can anyone reccomend a good handgun chambered in .40 S&W ?

So far, i've shot the following in .40 S&W:

Baby Eagle
STI 2011
SIG P226

I really like the Baby Eagle and the STI. Both very nicely weighted (I think full metal frames on both?)

I've also heard some mixed reviews about the H&K USP .40 S&W, can anyone share their experiences with the USP?

Picking a gun based soley on calibre is a crapshoot at best.

I have a Ruger KP94D and a ParaOrd 16-40LTD (both in .40), and I like them both.

That being said, lots of people hate both Ruger semi's and Para's.

Stick to a major brand name, and the rest will come down to personal preference. Try holding/firing a bunch of different ones at a range like The Shooting Edge in Calgary. This may help your search!

To the ones you already listed, I would add:

HK USP, Browning Hi-Power, or any quality 1911 (there are a few companies that make 1911's in .40 S&W)

umm Its short and weak and BTW and I found that the 40cals I fired had more snap then the 10mm's Ive fired..

Tell you what then, you stand down range and I'll pop a few off at you. Show me how you catch them in your teeth:dancingbanana:

Sure, it isn't as hot as the original 10mm, but most people couldn't shoot the 10, unless they where die hard gun people. It does make a good hunting round, pity we can't hunt with it.... The .40 goes through the cardboard (and most perps) with great reliability, not sure what you'd gain with the 10 other then excessive penetration. Oh, and more recoil and muzzle blast.
I'd buy a revolver in 44 mag, but an auto in 10? why bother....

XD-40, but to each his own. Find one that fits your mitts, and fire it.
That's the true way to have a pistol select you.

Glock 22, same frame as the 17 so you can steal parts if one goes down. Of course this means you'll have to buy the Model 17 as well.

Highly educated comment. Take a look around and see what the vast majority of self defense/law enforcement pistols are chambered in. Maybe do a little ballistic research before posting such useless statements.

155gr. JHP's at 1200fps and 500fpe
165gr. JHP's at 1150fps and 490fpe

x15+1 in a Glock 22 (un-neutered version) what else do you want for firepower?

This a joke or you're on drugs?
Actually, it's entirely possible that his observation is correct. Most factory 10 mm ammo is only marginally hotter than .40S&W, while guns chambered in 10 mm tend to be big and heavy. I wouldn't be at all surprised if a Glock 22 produced more perceived recoil than, say, S&W 1006 with factory ammo.

Considering the fact that there is NO legitimate self defence loads currently being produced for the 10mm by any of the major ammo producers this is probably true. No Gold Dots, No HST, No Ranger T series, not a single modern high performance self defence load for the 10mm exists from the big 4.

Call the .40 Short and Weak, but there's many great self defence loads available from all the major manufacturer's in all weights, all using the latest technology in hollowpoint design, all with proven street records from the many agencies that issue this round.

In 40S&W we have had very good luck with a Kimber Stainless II, and SIG P226. Not too bad were the HK USP, and Glock 22. Guns that could also be very good, but have not been in use long enough to determine are the S&W M&P, and XD40. For most light to medium use, any of the above will work great. The Baby Eagles did not last long at all.

Any experience with the .40S&W Hi-Power?
