I decided for a first pistol to go with 9mm as the ammo is so cheap {115 grain hardball}.
Anyhow I strongly dislike glocks, and never cared for the browning hi power,I have narrowed my choices to
-xd 9mm tactical springfield armory
-berreta 92f
-taurus pt-99
-sig saur p226
A cz 75 clone might do but I cannot locate any other than theIMI baby eagle, which I think is over priced.
Any insight would be appreciated.

Have you tried/considered the SW MP9?:)

Smaller hands and 9MM i'd recommended a 1911 in the 9MM flavour. The STI Ranger II fits the bill and I enjoyed mine all except for the front stippling which I did not enjoy that much after 100+ rounds.

From that list I'd go P226, XD9 and CZ75 and in that order if they fit your hands. P226R's are going for $850 new these days which is a STEAL.

I have shot countless rounds through various 1911's and hi powers, but I am leaning towards a more modern design.
The smith&wesson mp9 is not a very handsome pistol, I'll look into what else they have.

We clearly have different tastes, I love my M&P 9mm both to shoot and how it looks. Hell even my wife said that she llikes it!

Well if you don't like the MP, there is always the NP-18 :D

I own a P226 and I have quite small hands...don't know that i'd pick a P226 without trying it out at a range. I have fired a CZ75 and that fit my hand better. I've got a PARA .40 double stack and even that fits my hand better than the SIG.
But if possible try anything you are interested in before you buy. Most handgun owners i've met are more than willing to let you try their guns.

I'm really leaning towards the XD 9 on account of its lower price and rave reviews.
Anyone have any experience with it?

XD 9 is a very very good gun, it looks better than Glock but the grip is not smaller than a Sig 226 nor as comfort as a CZ or Beretta 92F. I am not sure you have a smaller hand than me. CZ fit me quite nice. I did try several time XD and this gun is a real shooter.

With small paws I'd go for a CZ75B++++++. Beretta is quite hand filling and the 226 will kinda feel the same. If I have to stick with your choices, I'd go with the 226.

I know it's not on your list but I have small hand and the Baby Eagle fits really good for me. If you want to stay close with the list, I would pick a Sig P229. I have the 226 and it don't fit as good as the 229.
