So I finally signed up for my restricted class, couple weeks away, day is booked off from work. It's happening lol. Probably way premature but I figure if start saving my pennies now for something when I get the rpal.

What's a good handgun to start off with? Looking for something that is nice enough that I wouldn't feel the need to upgrade the brand/sell it later on, but not overboard like a 2k handgun. I don't know much about handguns, the only one I have ever fired, or handled even, was a ruger p90 in 45 acp.

Well, my opinion is old school. But, I think that your first pistol should be a good quality target .22 semi-auto pistol like a Ruger Mk.2 or 3.
To really shoot well, you need to learn the fundamentals of sight alignment, target hold, and trigger squeeze.
You can do this best not distracted by recoil and by being able to shoot quite a bit of ammunition cheaply.
After that you can buy any pistol that suits your fancy and progress to any form of pistol shooting that you prefer.

Even a Glock.

IWI 941 Jericho in 9mm or 40 S&W range kit. Excellent construction,
Excellent fit, reliable, great accuracy for a service pistol. Factory grips suck, but are an easy upgrade(not so easy on a .45 Jericho...). Run forever and hardly need a bit of love or care. Some people struggle with the slide mounted safety, and racking them(not much for slide serrations), I don't(strong grip), but I would try that first, to ensure it works for you. Best part is the price, cheap like Kraft dinner. For a first, I'd to 9mm for the cheaper ammo.

Second this. Every time I take new shooters out, I let them use a variety of pistols, from my ruger mk2 to wheel guns to glocks and beretta's. All do best and have the most fun using the ruger. They hit the target, learn the fundamentals without dealing with muzzle flip and noise. Get a .22 first. You'll buy others, but always have fun with the .22, unless you only measure your manliness by calibre.

PPQ or P30/P30L in 9, HK45C in .45, or SW22 Victory in .22

I feel like Glock and CZ prices are ridiculous nowadays.

Ok thanks guys. I've had a pal for a while and I do ok with recoil with long guns. It's probably different with handguns. Maybe I should get a 22 first, I have always kind of liked those ruger mark pistols (mainly because of that movie assassins with Stallone lol).

Other then that I was thinking something 9mm, 38 special, or maybe 45 just because I really like the 1911 but I don't think I really want a 45 acp mainly for cost. I have a lever action in 38 special/357 mag so maybe a revolver

Since we can't carry, "black" pistols don't do much for me. If you have to, grab a used Glock, BANG BANG BANG then sell it. Big bore revolvers are fun and you shoot less volume so cost not such a big deal. Single actions are classic fun.

Well the plastic guns don't really bother me, to me there just too "utilitarian" or like work guns? To me. Can't really explain it. I for sure would like one eventually but there just not very good looking.
