What's a good first pistol

So, my RPAL finally showed up the other day. And I just made a deal with a fellow here for a H&K USP 9. I was thinking the whole time I was waiting I'd either get a CZ Shadow or a 226. But this deal came up in the EE, and I'm an impulsive child, so now I'm getting a USP.
I didn't care for the mag release on the one I handled at the gun store, but I'm sure once I spend some time with it I'll find a way that works. And if I end up hating it I'll just sell/trade it for a CZ.
Anyway's, pretty excited to be a hand gun owner. Hopefully I can get the transfer completed on Monday, because I can't wait to start pistol shooting!

And thanks to all for your advice

The Ruger GP100 .357 with 6" barrel if you like a longer barrel, with the lighter main spring installed it's an accurate gun you'll hand down to your grandson. If you want something smaller and lighter with the 4.2" barrel you can get the Ruger SP-101, just five shots but well balanced and a great shooter with the lighter spring installed. As far as a first semi auto goes in 9mm, I'd go with the CZ Shadow SP-01...it's smooth, accurate, and easy to shoot well because of the weight of the steel gun. The barrel sits low in the frame, reducing muzzle jump, and you can pull the hammer back and shoot it in single action with a sweet light trigger pull. A reasonable price makes it even more attractive. I'd get the 13 pound recoil spring from Dlask Arms and replace the stocker, which is heavier than you need and makes racking the slide harder than it has to be. The factory spring is heavy in order to handle a steady diet of NATO 9mm +P+ ammo, but for standard loads and the odd +P, the 13 pound spring is just fine. If you get the 11 pound version, only shoot standard target loads through the pistol.

I would go with whatever centerfire 9mm appeals to you and learn to dryfire. You can learn marksmanship through dryfire practice and it is cheaper than 22. No ammo required.

I bought an M&P 40 as my first pistol and I never regretted it. The 22LR is nice because you can get quite a bit of shooting in but I would get bored just shooting that. My 40 had some bang and kept my interest. Although it has more recoil I still got pretty profecient with it and with the ammo being more expensive it also got me into reloading!!

my first was a CZ shadow, found a used Kadet 2 conversion kit and prefer it over my GSG .22, I have a couple 1911's but find them too expensive to shoot, Kadet 2 is a bit fussy on ammo compared to the GSG but is very accurate, No regrets buying CZ
