What's a good rugged scope base for a Marlin 336?

Because the aperature has to be close to the eye, the closer the better.
For this reason aperature sights are completely unsuitable for use on a handgun.

The dot or holographic sights are also a top choice in the rifle events. They are used on rifles that were originally issued with aperature sights.

Apparently the military believes that the dot type sights are also superior on rifles.

The U.S. Army signed a contract with Aimpoint guaranteeing the purchase of 80,000 (with the option of purchasing an additional 20,000) Aimpoint Comp M electronic reflex sights and associated mounts for the M16A2 rifle and M4A1 carbine. Aimpoint sights now become the primary aiming systems for these two military firearms.

My pic would be the Talley base and ghost ring with their QD rings. With this system you would be able to switch between the scope and ghost ring should your scope become damaged, or should the shooting problem be better answered with irons.

That sounds interesting and may be a better choice than what I'm presently using. By any chance do you have a picture of a set up like that?

Yup, but you'll have to excuse the fact that they're on my 602. These are the Marlin bases, and the ghost ring attaches right to the scope base. The base and the ghost ring should be purchased as a matched set so they are mated at the factory.

Thanks Boomer. Why I opted for the Weaver pivot mounts is if the need arises while in the field, it's a matter of pivot off & in a second or two, you're ready to use the iron sights. Then pivot back on and you're good to go with the scope, same time frame. I could send/e-mail a pic but I have yet to figure out the posting pic's 'thing'.

Thanks for the heads up on the Talley system. - but would you have to get a taller front sight?

Good question, and the answer is yes, particularly with a low front sight like the factory Brno's. The Tally ghost ring is adjustable for windage only, so the height of the front sight must be regulated to your load. Besides, if you are sophisticated enough to se the advantages of the ghost ring, then you must surely be sophisticated enough to prefer a front post to a bead.;) I've ordered a NECG ghost ring for my ZG-47. These sights are fully adjustable for windage and elevation, and clamp right to the Brno's rear dove-tail. Dave Jennings is making me up a brass front post for it similar to the one on my 602. I want a rifle I can shoot primarily with irons, and I think this will be it, although I have an old Kahles fixed 6X that wouldn't look out of place on it.
