What would a Remington 788 in 30-30 Winchester be worth these days? In decent condition of course. I want to play around with cast bullets in the 30-30, and I thought the Remington might be a good candidate.

If you're looing for one, they aren't very common. In good shape, expect to pay at least $550 and most likely more.
You might be better off finding a Savage 219 single shot.

They are worth what you are willing to pay or what the seller turns down. Their market value at present is quite high considering the performance of new rifles like the Stevens 200, Savage Axis, Marlin XL/XS.

For your purpose a Savage340/Stevens325 in .30-30 might do as well and can be had for less money. But if you like the 788 well enough, pay.

That's interesting. A friend of mine just told me the same thing, that the price will be high. Funny how a gun that started out as a budget in the line up, ends up being one you have to pay a premium for. Thanks for the info guys.

I've got a 788 in 7-08 that I'd probably let go for about $350, but in all honesty it should be re-barreled, although it holds about 1.5" at 100. Given $600 for a custom barrel installed, I doubt if anyone wants to make that kind of investment in a 788. I got it as part of an estate sale, but the first couple inches of bore were nearly closed off with rust; it appeared that his various guns had been left standing muzzle down in water for quite some time, but the 788 was in the worst condition. I purchased a barrel reamer which is normally used to prepare a barrel for the installation of a muzzle break, and cut the rifling back to the length of the tool, a bit less than 2". I've been meaning to GunKote the barrel, the receiver's original blue still looks alright, but haven't got around to it for one reason or another. By rights I should shoot it at 300 to see if it will actually maintain 1.5 MOA beyond a 100 before I decide what to do with it.

I remember me as a teenager (1969) buying his first centrefire rifle at Hallams on Yonge Street, below Bloor, Toronto. A 788 in 22-250, for the sum of $89.95 plus the then 3% provincial sales tax.

I see guys asking $450 or more for 308 and 243 at gun shows and no takers. Can't say as i've seen a 30-30 or 44 mag at thje places i frequent in 20 years.

I still have very rare Rem 788 6mm Remington "Left-Handed" in very good condition. It shoots pretty accurate. It is been in safe for a long time and I'm debating to sell it to the right buyer or take it apart and build in custom, like 284 Shehane.

I think it would be best to leave it as original. I learned that 6mm Remington magazine is worth $100 alone. I have two of them.
I'd probably sell/post it in EE soon.
