I have a chance to pick up and Swift No4 Training rifle with the original case and am wondering what is a good price for it? Is looks to be in very good shape. The case is a little worn but still not to bad. Any idea what it is worth?

Bare trainer rifles are around $125-$175 or so. With the box, target stand and targets, up around $400. Problem happens when old guys get their nephew to look on the interweb thingy to see what they are worth, and come up with the $400 price tag of a complete outfit and try and apply it to a $125 trainer.

Check it carefully....Many of the stocks are warped on the SWIFT. They were not made of seasoned wood and the stock has probably have warped like a green 2 x 4
$400 is an optimistic price on a SWIFT.... You are probably looking at 250 to 325 if in the case with the target holder in the lid of the case. Now if you had the target stand and targets......

Swift cases have the ability to self destruct. They were mainly glued together and the corners let go and the plywood delaminated quickly. Not being a "weapon" for the military most were stored in the basement or in unheated storage and the boxes just self destructed. If you are interested in the Swift and its variants there is a good booklet on the Swift that I assisted in writing some years ago. If anyone is interested, drop me a PM and I'll pass on the authors name and address as I believe he still has some copies. The book was a private printing and it had to be 15 to 20 years ago......how time flies. Right Smellie....did you get the article I sent you from 1985 ???

That one is absolutely right about the boxes. I bought one years ago at a Garage sale, and practically left a trail of shredded plywood out to the truck. And right about the quality of the wood ---it had a rifle in it that would be practical for shooting around corners, with a warp of about 15 degrees to the right.

However, it also had all the targets, stands and other accessories, including a manual of sorts, so the $5 I paid for it was well worth it as I had a better one but was missing some of the targets and holders.

.

Funny thing about the case. I have three of the swift rifles but only one case. Came out of new Zealand but the previous owner had also gutted the inside so he could put something else in it.

Then there is my EViL canadian trainer. Slab of wood that looks a bit like the outline or a Ross. and the only metal bits are two cone shaped studs in the top to act as signts.
However it does have the Canadian property mark stamped on it. No idea if it is WW1 or WW2. I suspect WW1.

John: You have a RARE Pierre Elliot Trudeau commemorative !!!! Before PET assumed room temperature he and if his ilk had their way that is all any of us would have. The only PM we had who thought you could pick up a dog turd by the clean end.
How are things in Arizona ?? Hang in there chum, October is coming!!!!
