What's a trench gun, and what makes it different than a normal shot gun?

I THINK thats it a term applied to the win 1897 shotgun of WWI fame. I guess it WAS the first true tactical shotgun. It came with heatshield and bayonet lug. I believe it was a 6 shot mag.

In World War I the Germans were apparently terrified of the American shotguns, and sued the US in the World Court over the use of this "inhumane weapon". They also threatened to execute any GI captured with a shotgun or shotgun ammo.

Yet, IIRC, the Germans were the first to use mustard gas...hmmmm! Sort of the pot calling the kettle black!
