Whats a Unfired 1980's Winchester M70 XTR in 7x57 worth?

Rare would be more like 7x62 S&H, or 30 Newton, etc.... 7x57 is FAR from rare.

Agreed..... But does rare really add or decrease value in the general market?.....

Not countering you, I am a very basic realoder at this point, but I do know I can reload for anything..... To me, that means i should get a discount on a rifle that requires reloading for, not me having to pay an upper to do so......

But, I still don't think a rifle of "quality" should be assessed at axxis level because I can't buy the ammo at CTC.....

The issue is less rarity, and more desireability, in a platform that has appeal... in this XTR the fact that it is a 7X57 increases the value over, say a .30/06, IMO... you won't find any discounts for "reloading only" cartridges, and often the opposite is true.

Case in point, if this rifle had been a .270 or .30/06 this thread would not even have been started.

Agreed. The chambering is the only upside.

Don't disagree Bruce...... But based on hype, have you bought an axxis lately?

As for caliber, a rare caliber is rare because little to none use it...... IMOP, it doesn't add value..... Unless it's in a caliber that is sought after by a certain market.. Like a Wagner or .375.........

A family member has bought the Savage Axis in 7mm-08. I did considerable playing with it, along with the Tikka T3 in the same calibre, that I bought for a grand daughter. I was really taken with how well the Savage grouped, with there being no distinguishable difference in accuracy between the Savage and the Tikka.
And in neither one did I let the barrel cool between shots! If I was shooting a five shot group, with either rifle, I just shot them one after the other, letting the barrel get hot and each rifle held the group perfectly.

I would say $850-900, the unpopular 7x57 caliber should bring it down to $850. I have a 223 and would not let it go for less than $1000. Caliber makes the difference to me. Its a beauty of a gun. But if you need 7x57 ammo I have about 10 boxes of 7x57 to get you started.

Brand new FW just quoted at online store: 799.99 to 879.99
Brand new Super Grade: 1179.99
+ Tax
Free Shipping.

That rifle is worth max 700 or what the owner can get for it.

There is a local guy that listed a S&W .30-06 (Howa) with a starting price of 1500, he is down to 800 now.

Just because the rifle was produced in low numbers does not necessarily mean it is worth a fortune.

Safe kisses and dents take it out of the "new" category. Personally I don't feel it is worth more than $650. Doesn't matter if it is truly unfired, it has some minor damage to the wood.

Not doubting your word on the prices your quoting for new feather weights and Super Grade Model 70's. But I would like to know exactly what source is selling them at those prices at this date. ???

The OP's rifle in my opinion would be valued to be fair to all in the $700. dollar range due to the stated nice condition and the calibre of 7x57 which is not rare but not common either, that fact could either be a plus or minus depending on what a buyer is looking for. The XTR designation was a little cosmetic BS and hype at the time by Winchester to sell more rifles. Push feed M-70's from the early 70's on to when they where discontinued where a well made solid rifles. Trying to compare a Savage Axis to a M-70 is like comparing a tin can to a good porcelain mug. They will both hold water and you can drink out of them and that's about as far as the comparison can be taken. Like noted, they are not in the same price bracket. Like all used articles, it is worth what someone is willing to give for it. When a fella is selling his gun it is always worth top dollar plus. When he is buying he wants it for next to nothing. Some where in between there is the happy medium. In this day and age and time $600 to 700 is going to be it.
