what's a winchester worth?

Personally I think a 1965 vintage 94 is worth around $250, one of the worst years of all for quality in the 94. I wouldn't trade a 336 Marlin for two of them.

That bad eh? I knew that quality did take a hit post-64, but I never thought it was really serious.
Did they get any better as time went on?

The sub standard parts were replaced with better parts in the years following. The absolute best 94s as far as fit and finish go, are likely the new Miroku made rifles. The only 94 that I currently own, is a mint pre crossbolt safety 94AE that I just purchased on the EE, for a great price.

Beg to differ. The best 94's as far as fit and finish go are those made 1894 to around 1920. The Japanese crap doesn't measure up to these at all. The 94 improved considerably from 1965 quality wise. Those made in the 1980's were leaps and bounds superior to those made in the mid 1960's.

I'm with the low boys...$250-$300. Great shape or not, no one cares. It's a Post-64 and built right in the beginning when they were still trying to save as much money as possible.

I'd do the trade.

1965 was a low point in 94's. They got better after '68

Yes, I trade a 1965 '94 for a new Remington made Marlin any day of the week.

And, I do agree the Miroku made Win levers are better than a Pre'64. Just as the new FN made Model 70 is better than the post war Pre'64 Model 70's.
