What's best for pistol cleaning & lube products

For curiosity, I just checked both vendors websites and none of them has 1 gallon cans in stock which is the cheapest way of buying Ballistol. So far, only Can Ammo and Ballistol Canada offer 1 gallon cans.
Well if you are looking to purchase by the gallon, then Canada Ammo is your source.

Another vote for Ballistol as a cleaner because it is nontoxic to me and the environment. But some do find the smell of Ballistol a little hard to take. I've also just started using a synthetic, food grade (N1) oil as a lube (no smell).

Do you mind sharing which food grade oil? I use Superlube.

Another Ballistol fan here. I have usually purchased mine from Amazon.com. I shall have to see if the gallon is a better deal.

WOW.... You guys are buying this stuff a gallon at a time?

I'm still working my way though a gallon of CLP I got 5 years ago. Have used no more that 1/16 of the jug and I tend to over lube.

Super Lube (Great product by all accounts that can use a better name for marketing purposes, IMHO) is a N1 food grade oil for incidental food contact. Super Lube is also available in grease form. I have been trying out both for only a short period.

Really liking Lucas gun oil in my bolt action firearms. Using it almost exclusively now. For Semi Automatics Pennzoil Red Synthetic wheelbearing grease for extreme pressure and sliding areas. Synthetic does not run away from heat. Royal Purple 75-140 is unbeatable in IPSC guns. It sticks better than most, provides almost as much protection as grease, and stays put. Compatible with the red wheelbearing grease.

Hoppes freezes in the winter. Had an AR15 bolt freeze and my pistol slide froze in a holster a few years back now. Same goes for Froglube. Both hit the trash bin.

The three I use (in order) are G96 , Ballistol and Eezox. All three run well in all seasons.
I use G96 because it smells good.. Ballistol stinks up the house, and Eezox.. well, it works fine but I don't have much of it.

WD40 to soak a heavily gummed action, followed by Ballistol after bore cleaning. If I will keep the pistol for a while inside my safe, I will put few drops of synthetic oil around friction areas. A light dab of Ballistol around finished areas before moving into storage. I ditched FROGLUBE 2 yrs ago as it gummed the action of my semi-autos during the Polar Vortex of 2013-2014. Lucas and Archoil products are also good. Copperzilla for copper and lead fouled barrel.

Thought this thread may be perfect to ask this...I was on an american forum and one guy said he uses brake cleaner to spray on his semi auto pistols. He sprays his lower and slide, barrel for cleaning then lubes after. Anyone else hear of this?

Of course. Works great to totally strip away any oils etc.

Yep, just don't forget to re oil everything! I made the mistake of not oiling the sear cage/trigger after 100 rounds the trigger wasn't returning unless I hit it with my finger. A quick cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and reoil was good as new.

"Great stuff for cleaning off old lube and powder residue"

Thanks folks...good to know, since I do my own brakes and have cleaner all the time and it's cheap.

Remington action cleaner and an old tooth brush to clean and hopps 9 for the barrel, dry lube to lubricate anything im using outdoor in winter months and whatever gun oil is on sale to use for the rest of the year.

Remington action cleaner is basically the same as brake clean but some brake cleaners can damage some plastics so for the price diff why take a chance?

Also anyone using automotive motor oil to lube their guns, you may want to use something else, although its perfectly fine for your gun it may not be for you. Modern automotive lubricants have detergents and additives that are not human friendly an can be absorbed thru the skin which is why its mandatory at most shops for their techs to wear nitrile gloves. I myself have had blood poising several times in the last 10 years even while wearing proper gloves. Again for the difference in price for proper gun oil is it worth the chance?

Anything wrong with using Rem dry lube even in summer months?

Almost every oil works good. I tried a bunch of them, from heavy mobil 1, to light oil. I have settled on G96. The normal one. The synthetic one is also very very good in the winter, even on my outdoor padlocks when its -30, but it does not smell as good. I noticed that Amsoil makes a gun oil now.

Living in Saskatoon I guess you'd know -30 more than I would in Ottawa...LOL. May be a stupid question but what is G96 and where do you get it?

Wholesale sports.
look up G96 gun oil. I have the aerosol can, the small reg gun oil, and the synthetic clp. I really like the little oil bottles, as they have a red plug under the cap as well as the glue bottle type screw top. Never leaks in the range bag.
