my dad has been enjoying shooting my AR's for a couple years now and he called me up the other night and told me he was gonna pick himself up one.
but rather then pick up a entry level one or a shorty he is going in another direction.
he is wanting to pick up what im guessing they call a Varmint gun.
from what i can gleam they are AR's that have heavy barrels and match triggers and are ready for optics and have a old style A2 butt stock on them and he wants a nice long barrel, oh and they are chambered for wylde (sp?) so they can shoot either the .223 or 5.62

so he has found 2 he likes but he dosnt know anything about either company and nor do I.

so the question is which gun is better between these 2.

1) the Rock River RRA LAR-15 Varmint A4 found here.

or

2) the Armalite M15A4 (T) .223 Wylde 20" bbl found here.

as a 3rd option he was looking at Windham Weaponry - VEX Varmint Exterminator .223 20" bbl but i think the he was prefering the Rock River or the AramLite over it just for looks but it can be found here and here.

from just having a quick look myself they all look to be about the same.
long bull match barrel, upgraded triggers ect ect ect.
so the question comes down to what is better.... a Rock River or a ArmaLite (or a Windham - not even sure if these are up in canada yet)

I like Armalite but any of these will fit the bill. Pretty much price and which one he prefers.

One other option is the Stag 6R. I own one of these.

A PRS stock is a great upgrade for these types of rifles. The A2 works well but the PRS is worth going to. Might make a good Xmas present after he choses his rifle. Magpul Miad grip is also good. Although the hogue grip on the Stag works well and isn't worth changing.

Let us know what he choses. Look up reviews on all the above rifles. There are a few that include a couple of these choices in one review.

My friend in the states has a Rock River and I was shooting my Armalite M15 with him. Both had 16" barrels, stock triggers and 3x9 Burris scopes.
The fit and finish appeared the same, only real differance was the name on the side.

Both took out clays nicely at 230 yards.

Got a Core 15 piston with 1 in 8 ss Match barrel and a Sigarm M400 Enhanced D.I. 1 in 7 twist for starters... JP.

I prefer Armalite over Rock River but agree with Epoxy and can14 that Stag is another excellent choice.
Windham is just new Bushmaster and I used to own a 20 inch Bushmaster varmint/target upper with 1:8 twist and wylde chamber and it was very accurate.
1:8 is my preferred twist for 223/5.56 and the wylde chamber is an excellent option to get if you can.

You really can't go wrong with any of the brands mentioned so far so just pick the one that comes dressed up the way he wants it to look so you spend less on accessories later and more on ammo and mags.

It's 5.56x45 not 5.62. :)

Would recommend the RRA.

If you can get it with the 2 stage trigger is definatly worth the investment. For the price it is one of the best rifles you can get if it wasnt for the paperwork that goes along with restricted rifles would have kept the 2 I used to have :(.

haha, i had 7.62 on my brain last night i guess!

ya, when i started to look into these i sat back and thought that they where all about the same.
thats why i came in here and asked just to make sure.
just wanted to make sure no one would run in and say.... "woaaa! dont buy a "#%$%&$" because they make their "*(^&($%" wrong and they break!"

i think the old man was leaning towards the RR.
email he sent me this morning said he was gonna order the RR tonight when he got home and if for some reason they where out of them then he was gonna go with the ArmaLite.

Sorry for the necro, but I am facing the same choice and wondering which way to go for a 20" varmint upper. I want something to reach out a few hundred metres and there has not been a tonne of joy in getting my old norc (the only 5.56 upper I have right now) to behave better with handloads.

Any new opinions in the last year and a half with regards to the Windham VEX vs the RRA varmint?

How's your dad like his RRA, wayupnorth?

For pricing it's a dead heat, and I'll leave either as they come, other than putting on a scope. I'll just use one of my existing lowers as well, so nothing down there matters as I'm just planning to buy an upper

I'd go with the RRA. They're good quality and have better name recognition and market share compared to the WW. I own a RRA 16" varmint bbl upper and that thing will shoot five round cloverleafs all day long at 200M with factory Gold Medal match. They're even tighter with my own handloads using 69gr Sierra Match Kings.

I'd go for a 24 if there was one in stock. Even with the exchange IRG and #####h are cheaper than pre-ordering one through Questar by a good few hundred $.

And in the end the extra few inches won't make much difference to me, I expect.
