Canada ammo has the lead stuff for 25 cents a round my local dealer has the 1600 round stuff with steel core. What's better ammo? I've heard the steel core stuff is hard on your barrel.

The bullet core never comes into contact with any part of the barrel and has no effect on barrel wear. Whether lead or steel core, it is all ball ammo. One might have a slight accuracy edge over another, but assuming you're asking about 7.62x39, accuracy isn't really that big an issue. Go for the cheapest, and buy all you can.

If all you're shooting is paper... Sure, buy the steel core if it's less $.

If you plan on shooting steel targets... Do not buy steel core.

Haven't seen any steel core since the yellow boxes ages ago. Thought all the Norc and Euro surplus was all lead core. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also the steel core stuff was deemed armour piercing in the US not that they even sell Norc ammo anymore.

Steel core tends to damage steel targets. If you don't plan to shoot any steel it doesn't matter. I'm on my second case, it shoots accurately but some rounds may not go off in my experience. I've seen a fair amount of NORC ammo shot this summer and most seem reasonably happy with it. Someone was telling me that something about some of the rounds being a little short is causing them to not be reached by the firing pin properly (can you tell I don't load :) )

I've been shooting the 1600 round case (yellow box)I bought back in Jan, no steel, works fine. Just picked up the Canada Ammo 1120 round case, same stuff just a couple years newer, stamped 95 vs 93. Buy what's cheaper and lots of it!
