Depends on what you want it to be and in the case of the 10/22 how much money you want to sink into it.

I went 10/22T and I am happy with it.
 
The Remington is much younger than the 10/22, so it doesn't have as many aftermarket parts just yet, but it seems to be picking up steam.
 
They are both decent .22's in my experience with both of them. That being said, others have complained about the 10/22 being less than accurate, which I never really noticed; and the 597 being very picky about ammo, which I also never had a problem with. So you should be happy with whichever one you do decide to go with...

But, for what it's worth, I sold them both and bought a TC R-55. The R-55 blows them both out of the water! It is the ultimate semi-auto .22, IMO.
 
Also take a look at the Marlin Model 60. Probably the best out of the box of these 3 but obviously does not have the same amount of aftermarket stuff that the 10/22 has. Price wise its above the 597 and below the 10/22.
 
In my opinion it's hard to go wrong with the 10/22. It's been around for many, many years now. While they work fine just as they come out of the box, there are so many after market parts available that also make them fun to customize.
 
The rotary mag of the 10/22 and the abundance of aftermarket parts sold me on the 10/22. The reality is, you could buy either and be happy or disappointed, depending on how well the gun was put together, but it will be easier to fix the Ruger if you get a lousy barrel.
 
10/22 you can do close to what ever you want with this rifle. you can choose the look you want a get a decent accuracy but $$ will drive where you want to go.

I really loved the 597 .22 magnum heavy barrel target model. It was a little pricey, but worked flawlessly(for .22 magnum auto loader, unlike the 10/22 .22 magnum auto loader). However, I do prefer the 10/22 in .22lr because of how many parts and accessories there is for them. Let's hope that the tommygun kit comes to Canada.;)
 
My experience concludes that the 10/22 is a superior machine in therms of quality. I find the 597 to be flimsy and cheap (reflected in the price). If you are only about price, the 597 is "better" in that department. As a side benifit of the 10/22, there is almost unlimited aftermarket parts available. There is a reason why 3rd party companies invest in creating 10/22 add-ons...

10/22 when modifying.

Pretty cut and dry. That's probably what you want to base your answer on. My wife's stock 597 is very accurate with a $10 scope. I can't wait to see it perform if I ever put a $100 scope on it.
 
well i went with a laminate black and grey stock ruger 10/22 with the stainless



now i just need to find a stainless folding stock and a pistol grip would be welcome.

Haven't spent much trigger time on a 10-22, so I can't really comment on the Ruger, but FWIW I've put nearly 500rnds through my 597 w/o any real issues (one jam). Very accurate, and I haven't cleaned it yet. Also, the 30 shot mags are cheap, readily available, and work very well. 10-22 mags seem to be scarce and a bit spendy--at least in this corner of the country.
