What's better than an M14?

No holds barred and cost is no consideration, would you guys take an AR10 over an M14? Fictional Canada where everything is non-restricted again. How about a Valmet M78 (.308 AK, was also available in non-.308 but we'll talk the .308)? FN FAL? .308 M1 Garand since cost no longer matters? Or an HK G3 / 91?

I have to be honest, much as I enjoy working on the M14, I think there are a lot better rifles out there. Our rules shrink the pool drastically however.

I've used all but one of the above here and abroad, and of all those listed I prefer nearly every one to the M14. The others never chuck extractors (Garands aside), seldom to near never blow up, often have superior ergonomics (G3, FAL left side charging, and and all less the M1 have a lower bore axis, less muzzle climb), better intrinsic accuracy (AR10), more reliable (AK / M78), better scope mounting, etc. The M14 will always be a winner along with the M1 with regards to its incredible iron sights, the rest is a pretty aged design of mediocre merit, that works fairly well.

So, all costs and considerations such as laws today aside, what would you have in the slot for your M14 in the cabinet?

I have a couple of these, and with a side mount scope it's my pick, mine run the basic irons which are poor beyond 200 yards, its only real drawback in my opinion. Close second is the AR10, actually it could even inch to #1.

Id love an FN FAL, but i cant have one so im content with my m14s

also DeadlyDALEK that gif in your sig made me spray coffee all over my screen lol

I'll throw the Galil on the podium.

I was actually in the store to buy one with cash in hand about 2 weeks before they went prohib and the store owner talked me out of it. I do thank him for that.

Got many very good rifles in my herd but this one having this punched onto the barrel and reciever, make it kind of ... Charismatic... JP.

Cost is not a consideration for me, but all things being equal I would take the dropping power and distance of the 7.62 over 5.56 Nato any day of the year. You can keep your ARs, its a girlie gun compared to an M14 or FN.

The AK pattern guns are reliable, but ergo's suck and accuracy is lacking. The AR10 is accurate, but reliability is less than stellar. The FN is the reigning champ for most widely adopted. I trained on the FN and love it and would buy one again if the Canadian firearms bureaucrats could ever pull their heads out of their butts. That being said, the FN's sights are not as good as the M14. The G3? I am afraid that is one I can't comment on as I have little experience with the HK rifles - fair amount of trigger time on the MP5 though. There may be rifles out there that are better than the M14 at one thing or another, but more than likely not better at all aspects. I like the ergonomics of the M14 and will be keeping mine. Is it the ultimate? No. My vote goes to the FNC1.

Most probably an AR-10.

The parts aftermarket is just too good.

Outside of that, and money not an issue, probably an H&K G3

Answering the OP's question, I think almost any rifle with a pistol grip is better, ergonomically at least, than the M1-M14 pattern stock.

I have a M-305 that 45ACPKING worked over, and it's a really good rifle. Accurate and reliable.

Having used the FN C1A1 when I was in the Forces (way back in the day :d), I thought it was a great rifle as well.

If money were no object and we didn't have to deal with our idiotic firearms laws, I'd want to get my hands on the Brazilian version of the FN-FAL, the IMBEL. IIRC FN stopped manufacturing the FAL in 1975 (If I'm wrong, please tell me) but again IIRC IMBEL still makes the FAL pattern rifle (of course, I could get one from DSA in the States - assuming again we didn't have our dumb laws)>

For a battle rifle that will take abuse - G3.

For accuracy - AR10

For even more accuracy- AIAW (not a semi but it is tough as all hell).

What really prove that the M-14 concept is very actual, is that today's soldiers that have the choice of many advanced conception rifles, on purpose choose a M-14 to bring with them, in my book that mean if they trust their life with it, it say's alot... JP.
