What's better than an M14?

Sure they are comparable rifles, both full size, box magazine fed, semi auto, and chambered for a full size round. It's the Russian equivalent from the same era.

My SVT is amazingly accurate, much better than any M14 or Garand that I have shot. It weighs 8.5 lb unloaded compared to the M14 @ 9.2lb. It's just as reliable as an M14.

The SVT is a good rifle, but i would just pick up a M-14, mainly for accuracy and sights... JP.

That is probably because you have a scope on your SVT, and have only shot an m14/m1 with open sights. With both rifles using Irons, the M14 Aperture sight is far superior!!!!

For my 41 year old eyes, its the sights that make the difference.

Me too, that's why I scoped it. Makes a BIG difference :) It shoots 1 " at 100 and a ragged hole at 50, and that's with bulk surplus. If I had to grab a rifle to save my life it would be my SVT. $300 for the rifle. $240 for the scope, and $245 for 880 rounds.

Nah..... You guys can have it all ;)
All I need is an M14, a no1mk3 enfield and a single shot cooey. Oh and I can't forget my trusty, bling free, 1911's
Had a valmet .308 hunter long ago, too heavy for me. I'd love to own a steyr aug in .308 or a Galil but they would just be owned as toys.
I'm skilled and comfortable with my list above, they would be my be all end all keepers if I had to grab n go :D

Have one of those too, Valmet M-88 Hunter, and it's the heaviest one the .243 (same barrel contour as the .308, by more steel there due to the tiny bore).

It's lighter than any wood stocked M14 I've built, and about the same or lighter than the fiberglass, just threw this on the scale 2 mins ago:

"...better than an M14?..." For what purpose? Mind you, there's no such thing as one rifle being better than another. They're just different. And an M-14 is a select fire battle rifle. Those have been evil since 1935.

Should note that's 8lbs, 4.9 oz so just over 8 1/4 pounds, not 8.49lbs. That's also including a better scope mount than an M14, which grows another few ozs with an ARMS 18 or sadlak etc. All these rifles in the same class generally weight the same, about 8-9.5lbs, the Valmet Hunter is one of the lightest of the class really. It's half a pound lighter than a No.1 MkIII SMLE as well. I sold my .308 M88 / Hunter but I suspect it would come in at about 8lbs, lighter than all but the very lightest M14s despite hosting a slightly heavier barrel than the GI M14.

All non restricted ..... I wouldn't stop till I had them all, I'm single with no children this would be a reality

Well, having shot all of the rifles the OP mentioned, except the Valmet, at one time or another, my choice is an AR-10. Preferably an Original.

I will have a NM AR-10 just beside my NM M1A in my safe as soon a brand new one is available at one of our dealer... JP.

Maybe the valmet just "felt" heavier to me. I didn't weight it. Awesome rifle though... And along with the inglis mark2 bren I used to have many years ago.... I sure wish I had kept that Valmet LOL . I think it was under a grand? Nowadays... Holy crap them Valmets fetch some coin :)

My no1 mkIII is a custom bush rifle and weighs 8lbs 12oz with sling, cheekrest, scope mount and bushnell 3200 3-9 and empty mag.
She's a handy, rifle ;)

The original AI AR-10s are something special. If they had got into production a couple of years sooner, they would still be in widespread use.

I must say I am anxious to hear a few reviews and range reports of the SG 542's when they start to become a little more available. May be a viable 7.62x51 to add to the list.
