What's better than an M14?

Well, I do like my Norc, and I pine for my old SLR, but after long deliberation, Id go with my old SMG. Don't know why, just loved the little bugger :)

Some U.S. soldiers in Irak and Afganistan were using, NM M1A for there service rifle, that should say a lot

Doesnt say anything. Mothballed M14's brought back into service because they needed the capability of the 7.62 round, not the rifle itself.
Well that is not until SEI started doing their good work and turning the old war horse into a prized stallion in the form of an EBR

I like the M14, nice ergo's if a little dated and kick ass sights, there's just something about the gun. Having said that the FAL takes the cake, that would be my pick, if only we were allowed some of the DSA FAL's up here. LaRue OBR with a 16" tube is a definite contender, but I prefer piston driven. I wish FN went ahead an produced the FN FNAR Match, that looked particularly interesting, http://www.all4shooters.com/en/news/rifles/2012/FN-FNAR-Match-hunting-rifle/. If the RFB was a reliable sub MOA rifle I'd be all over it. Sorry, short answer FAL!

I have to agree with the OP. The popularity of the M305 is due to it being a reasonably priced 7.62 semi-auto with non-restricted status. No slight meant against it, great rifle, glad our government permits us to own it for the time being. But if you shrink the firearms gene pool small enough, which was the intent of C68 and it's associated OICs, then anything looks good. A single shot Cooey looks good compared to throwing rocks. I suppose we will find out sooner or later....

I have owned and/or used M14 (TRW), Metric FAL, FN L1A1 SLR, FN C1A1, C2A1, G3 (Portuguese, Greek and Norwegian variants), Steyr AUG, AK and AKM variants from Norincos to Valmets, Ak74, RPK, SVD, FNC in 5.56, AR 180 (Sterling contract), Daewoo, AR10 (Dutch contract), Brit L85 and LSW and of course all manner of AR/M16/C7.

My favourite was always the Metric FAL. It seemed just a bit slimmer and faster handling than the inch pattern SLRs, probably due to the furniture, but that is splitting hairs.

This afternoon i completly stripped down my NM M1A to clean and grease, all i can say, it is made like a tank and it all fit to the mm, this ought to be a great shooter... JP.

Probably between the G3A4 and a metric FAL. But M14 wouldn't be far behind especially if it was USGI with Auto.
Certain rifles fit certain people better.

I second the rply about the FN C1A1, I had the opportunity to serve with one many years ago, and It was an awesome rifle! just with the factory peep's, I could hit a man sized target at 300 and 600 meters no problem, and that's in quick succession! Its a SHAME its in the 12.6 category, as I'd own one.... or two.. ;-)

Answering the OP's question, I think almost any rifle with a pistol grip is better, ergonomically at least, than the M1-M14 pattern stock.

I have a M-305 that 45ACPKING worked over, and it's a really good rifle. Accurate and reliable.

Having used the FN C1A1 when I was in the Forces (way back in the day :d), I thought it was a great rifle as well.

If money were no object and we didn't have to deal with our idiotic firearms laws, I'd want to get my hands on the Brazilian version of the FN-FAL, the IMBEL. IIRC FN stopped manufacturing the FAL in 1975 (If I'm wrong, please tell me) but again IIRC IMBEL still makes the FAL pattern rifle (of course, I could get one from DSA in the States - assuming again we didn't have our dumb laws)>
