I've got a 20" 870 barrel. smooth bore with rifled sights. It is stamped "imp cyl", but when i measure the muzzle its 0.700" which is around full. not improved.
I can also feel a small ridge just inside the muzzle that is maybe 1/16 wide.
is this some sort of factory mix up or am i missing something?

A 12 gauge bore is supposed to be .729"... so you have about 8 hundred thou of constriction ...

How does it pattern?
How did you get 8 hundred thou?
I've only tried slugs out out of it so far. challenger slugs group very poorly at 25m. the same slugs shoot much better from my other guns. which is why i measured the bore

Given the historical state of quality control at Remington nothing would surprise me, but the ridge you mention is surely of particular concern when firing slugs because it's bound to take any spin off the slug and destabilize it.

I had a complete brain fart on my first reply. No explanation.

The "I can also feel a small ridge just inside the muzzle that is maybe 1/16 wide." The actual choke (constriction) is supposed to be as much as 2 inches long or sometimes even longer. Possibly this small ridge is a poor attempt. I would get it to a fellow who does choke alterations and measure the bore and maybe run a reamer or hone in.

I bought a brand new 870 Police in 2015 and when it arrived .... I could feel the tool marks inside the muzzle.

That barrel was never polished at the factory. I guess somebody at the factory that day did not feel like doing their job and just passed that barrel on to the next step in the production/assembly line.

Basically I had to take a drill and steel wool and polishing paste to it .... and polish that barrel myself.

Do you know when that barrel was manufactured?

No idea when the barrel was made.

I just dropped it off at my local gun smith. He's going to just thread it for screw in chokes

OP,
The Barrel Code/manufacture date letters are stamped in the barrel.

Ream/thread the barrel for Rem chokes, not the Pro bore choke tubes.

Rem choke threads are on the breech end of the choke tube.

Pro bore threads are on the muzzle end of the choke tube.
