good morning:

I purchased a knight .54 calibre muzzleloader many years ago and have enjoyed shooting it; it's light, accurate, and has lots of knock down power. Over the past while, I've noticed that Knight and other muzzleloader manufacturers don't seem to be making many .54 calibre rifles and instead seem to be on producing the .50 calibres. Am wondering why the focus seems to be shifting to .50 rather than .54.
 
.50 has become more popular but, i still sell alot of .54 Conicals....I just sold a sh%t load to williams Arms so someone must be using them.....Ben
 
Much better bullet selection and performance from the 50. the 54 is a hold over from patched round ball days when the only way to get a heavier bullet was to increase bore size.

You mean the recent order from Williams for 300 .54, FPHB, 450 gr conicals?...That would be me, to feed my IAB repro of the Confederate 1863 Sharps carbine....Your casting is excellent, and accurate...And I`m thinking, I just might want to order more....:D
 
.54 is like Beta Video tapes, you can argue all you want about the superiority, but if you want to be able to buy supplies everywhere, you chose wrong. I don't think anyones making new Beta tapes at all though, so maybe not a perfect analogy. :)

For whatever reason, the market settled on the .50 cal to meet it's needs.

Becomes self sustaining, too. As a guy that looks around a bit before I buy (most of the time) I can see that if a place out in the sticks is going to have any muzzle loader stuff at all, it's likely to be .50cal stuff.
If you don't mind casting and using loose powder, it's no big deal, but if you want to go with pellets and sabots, selection is slim pickings.

I sell alot of those and other more obscure bullets to Williams, they seem to really care about their customers and go out of their way to get stuff. Those are a bugger to make correctly but they worked great in a .54 test rifle. I hope this doesn't ruffle any feathers but, in both .54 and a .50 we got much better accuracy with a conical then with patched ball. Both rifles had the slow twist barrels, the .50 was a 1-66", and accuracy was far better with a conical then RB. Hope you enjoy shooting the .54!!!
