I bought one of the Bushnell Legend scopes for my new XR-100 Rangemaster. It is a 5-15x40 with mildot. The guy at the store mounted everything for me and he also bore sighted it. I took it out and sighted it in but now I have noticed that when I pull back from my shooting position and my sight picture/field of view starts to go dark around the edge of the lens, it is not circular. When I hold up the gun at arms length and look down the scope, I see an oval shaped view in my round scope. Has the scope been mounted poorly, I suspect that the windage or elevation or both have been ajusted to the extreme. Any info would be apprieciated.

your scope isnt properly adjusted to fit you. The space needed for a clear picture between your eye and the scope isnt right. When it is correct, your scope will be a crystal clear full circle of view. Incorrect positioning causes the black ring(s).
(Not 100% sure if this is called paralax or not).
Simple fix:
Slack off your scope rings and adjust the scope to have a clear view in your shooting position, then tighten the rings. Just be sure that you have your scope sitting level when you retighten the rings.. dont want a canted scope.

your scope has crappy eye relief and the problems you speak of are pretty common in less expensive scopes

When I am in my shooting position, the view through the scope fills the lens from edge to edge, and is clear. It is when I look through the lens from a distance that I see an oval picture surrounded by blackness. It seems to function fine, although the eye relief is small. I was concerned that it was maybe installed physically out of alignment and corrected with the elevation and windage ajustments nearly to the max. I suppose that as long as I hit what I'm aiming at, it's working. However, I think next time I will spend a few more bucks. :(

Perhaps you could count the clicks clockwise to bottom out the adjustments so that you can reset the poi back later.
Then recenter the reticle physically (eg equal number of clicks from both stops for W & E ) and see whether you still get an oval exit pupil. If it looks round then - your guess is probably correct and the uncentered erector lenses are the culprit... if that is the case you could try the Burris Signature rings to get a physical zero before you start twisting the dials.. good luck.

is this a problem for you with all scoped rifles, or just this one particular scope? :)
Just this scope. I also have a Bushnell Banner series on my .22 and a Leupold Mark 4 that will go on my Sendero when it comes in. These two do not have this problem.
