What's Hot and What's Not

Is BIGREDD the resident deer anus expert?
Well he does know white tails. Better than most here. And what's under a white tail??? A bung hole!:D

He seems to be MIA still though.

I'm heading that way on thurs. Think i'm going to pull his G/F away from him long enough for him to post a reply or 2 to his thread he started last week after a year of absence.

He has a great site too regarding his new guide business but i'm not sure he'd approve of me posting the link. I think he had a great turn out this year and maybe that's why he's so busy. He's got some awesome guys working for him this year too. (lucky bugger)

Any hoo, Bung holes rock!
what?

Cabela's Guide Model Fanny Pack - good if you are over 6', otherwise shoulder straps can't be shortened enough. Pack rides well, is easy on the back, carries a lot of gear and has enough internal pockets to keep small items organized.

I have used the same pack for a couple years now. I added a couple Buddy-Locs as well for range finder and camera. Great pack!

This years new gadget was the Stony Point Tripod. Works really well for the longer shots on the prairies and can double as a walking stick.

I wasnt' Impressed with Hornady SST's they dont' seem to hold together after hitting any kind of bone. You would think that a 150 gr. 270 bullet could leave an exit hold in a small doe ? Maybe Im asking too much out of a deer bullet, Im just glad the animal was recovered. Will load a toughter bullet next year.

Meindl boots with "fit IQ" from Cabelas, best boots I've ever owned. Fenix P1D flashlight (180 lumens, 1 small battery, tiny) Leica rangefinder. All new this year, all now indispensable.

The good, the bad, and the ugly:

Good:

PioneerBrand wool mackinaw: Best moose-hunting jacket ever. Always warm, always dry, even when sitting in a rainstorm on a river at 5am. Yes, it's heavy, but suck it up. 4 pockets were a god-send.

Sitka Gear 90% Jacket: Great jacket for when you have to do a lot of walking. Packs extremely well (read: small), VERY warm when all zipped up. It's polyester, so while it is very waterproof, it also is very hot at times. Would have liked more pockets, but no complaints.

Outdoor Edge Kodi-pack Knives: Good knives. Simple, utilitarian. Skinning knife holds a great edge, easy to touch up. Caping knife is RAZOR sharp.

Mountain Equipment Coop Air Hiking 28L Pack: I can't say enough good things about this pack. I beat the living HELL out of this pack. Left it in the truck and got rained on, kicked it, dog attacked it, survived 4 weeks of river-trips, got attacked by bushes and conifers, used it as a seat... Survived all the abuse I threw at it. Great for a DAY pack only. You can carry your rain gear, an extra warmth layer, and maybe your lunch, as well as a camelback, but that is it. One last thing about this pack: The rain-fly is a GREAT idea. I kept that on the pack all the time, no matter what I did. It works great as a mud/#### cover, and generally keeps your pack covered from the elements.

Helly Hansen polypro long underwear: Warmest I have ever used.

The Bad:

Walmart insulated rubber boots: Worked okay. Didn't fit well, no matter what boot size you tried. If you don't have to walk anywhere, they work okay. FAIL

Buck Alpha Hunter: Blade snapped working on a moose. FAIL

Cabela's MTO5 rainwear: Client showed up with it. Super expensive, super crappy. Guy got soaked in minimal rain. FAIL

Sitka Nimbus Rain Gear: It doesn't breath AT ALL, and you still got wet. Whether it was from sweating, or from the rain, we never could figure out. But for the price, For $800ish for the total suit, this gear better make it so you can walk on water. It doesn't. FAIL

The Ugly:

Great American Gunstock Company: See my thread on the 375 Taylor. Absolute mickey mouse operation.

Federal Black Cloud did well
Remingtin Express did well

Winchester Xpert performed like shot for me.

This was all waterfowl hunting.

Baikal MP153 semi was lovely and fuctioned without a hitch

MSR dragonfly and MSR pocket rocket,... cannot say enough... great!

Was dissapointed in Alsakan Pro guide kinife and was pleasantly surprised with a Gerber gator knife.

Marmot Eiger 40L back pack,... not overly impressed, but it works well.

The good, the bad, and the ugly... continued

The Good

Danner, Fort Lewis, all leather, unlined boot. 10" upper, fit very well, broke in well, this will be a great boot.

White Water, wind proof, water proof vest. Performed as advertised.

Knives of Alaska, Denali Series, Master Guide, folding knife. Probably the nicest locking folder I've ever seen and handled.

Propper, F7462 ECWCS MARPAT Gortex raingear. Not cheap, but I was tired of getting wet. This stuff is incredibly well made.

CZ 550 Magnum, nice rifle, well made and accurate. Very happy with this.

UGLY!!

Bushnell, Elite 4200, 1.25-4 x30mm, very nice scope. Excellent clarity and lowlight capability - ugly as a warthog. :p

Bad

Knight and Hale, Moose call, not sure what the heck it sounds like but it's nothing close to a moose!

BTW, this thread was a great idea. Nice to see what has worked and not worked for folks.
