Hey Guys,

I figured I'll ask here, I'm a new hunter about to embark on my first season of hunting, I have my small game licence, just curious whats in season right now, or coming up in the next month or two. Oh and whats a good spot to do some small game in Southern Ontario, I live in Mississauga.

The 1st thing you should do is pick-up a copy of the 2009 Hunting Reg's.

You can shoot coyotes, foxes, groundhogs, skunks, starlings. (check your by-laws)

But as far as "edible" small game...nothing really opens until Sept (check your WMU for date). :)

Groundhogs are edible, and actually pretty good eating depending on where you get them. I wouldn't eat one off the golf course, or from along the road, but from a clover field? For sure!

Now is planning time mostly. Are you in the draw for deer? Got any areas scouted? Now is time to get out there (not that I should preach on this too hard being currently on the wrong continent). If you're looking to hunt close to home, you'll want to start sorting out permission and access now. If you are interested in going further afield for deer season, there will be planning to start now.

How's your kit for hunting? There are a bunch of odds and ends that you won't want to be without, especially if you are interested in big game.

Post what you're interested in hunting, where you think you might hunt, what your gear situation is, and what hunting techniques think might become your style, and more useful advice should start pouring in.

Here is a bit more details are requested:

I don't mind driving, would love to hunt small game with .22 or shotgun.

I bought a deer tag, didnt' enter the draw because I'm still confused as to what it acctually is. If I want to hunt anglered deer do I need to enter the draw or is my existing tag ok?

What you bought was a Deer License; it came with a Seal allowing you to hunt Antlered Deer, in any WMU. If you want to hunt Antlerless Deer (Does, Fawns etc.) you have to send in the part that asks you what WMU you would like to do that in, Antlerless "Tags" are WMU specific.

You may also apply to a "Controlled" Hunt in a specific WMU, for Antlered or Antlerless deer, or both, depending on the state of the herd, it will state which on the Tag you receive.

Best to get a copy of the Hunting regulations and read over it a Bazillion times, to understand the system

Where are you at? The only way to hunt locally may be to apply to one of the controlled hunts (aka the 'shotgun hunts'). If you are near some more central areas or some eastern areas, it may be a matter of applying for an antlerless tag for one of the regular gun seasons. It would be a shame not to have an ant lerless tag - it'll be worth the effort to figure out which draw you need to be applying to.

As for small game, that's mostly dependent of access to private land in the south too, or driving to areas with crown.

"...read it over and over, or..." It's up to you to know and understand the laws in the WMU you're hunting. Including any local by-laws. "I didn't know." or "The guys on Gunnutz, said.", doesn't count.

Well - You stand a much better chance of getting an invite if you have a doe tag - and you'll need to state the WMU's you'll be hunting in. Also, "deer camp" hunting is a bit more rigorous than chasing bunnies. You are usually expected to stay for several days, are expected to chip in work wise, and financially (typically 40$ per day).
Also, your fellow hunters may not expect you to know much about deer hunting, but they would expect you to know the regs.

Hey Luc, you an me are in this together. I've read these damn regs a hundred times and its still confusing but I'm getting it. If your ever thinking about going out and need a partner PM me cuz I could sure use the help!!

IIRC

Skunk, coyote, crow, and groundhog

good luck finding good spots, there is next to no public land in SW ontario which means banging on doors and getting permissions.

One other thing to watch out for is Sunday gun hunting, its not allowed in many SW Ontario WMUs

I'm a member of OFAH, and they do have sunday gun hunting, no clue what that means though and where in Simco I can acctually hunt, any advice?

I wish I lived in Alberta or Saskatchewan, I think I would be a lot happier. Too bad my wife would never fall for it, unless.............I'm going to try something, I will let you guys know tomorrow if it worked. NOPE didn't win the 649, :(
