What's in your first aid kit?

Hey fellow gunnutz,
I had a first aid kit (adventure medical I believe) that I lugged around for almost the last 20 years. On the advice of a friend, I double checked everything in it and turns out, a lot of stuff had dried out or got exposed to water. After going through the kit, turns out almost 90% went into the trash. This kit was fairly big...I wanted to create a more hunting oriented smaller kit I'd always keep in my backpack. I was thinking of including the following in the new kit I'm going to be building:
Israeli bandage
quikclot
Tourniquet
Shears
Triangle fabric for splints
Wrap (sprained ankles)
Aspirin
Ibuprofen
Tick remover
Rolled Gauze
Cough drops
ziplock
medical tape
antiseptic wipes
bandages
moleskin
safety pins
after bite
polysporin
tick removal plyers
bandages
moleskin
polysporin


What do you guys carry on your person while hunting?
Also, do you guys know of a site where you can order piece by piece first aid supplies? I was going through amazon, but you can never just get 1 or 2 of (for exemple), antiseptic wipes, it's always a bot of 100 or a box of 24 triangular wrap for splints, etc.

Can't help you with the materials list, but I can echo you on the need to check for water-damage/expiration.
At one point I went kind of first-aid kit nuts.
I bought a medium sized kit for both cars. I bought a large kit for the camper, and another to live with our canoe camping gear. Then I bought mini-kits for both canoes, my bike, my hiking back-pack.

Bottom line, a whole lot of first aid kits!

I felt really prepared for a while, and for a while I was.

I'll never forget one evening at the kids soccer game, another kid fell and cut their knee open, and the coach had no first aid kit and everyone was running around yelling "who has a first aid kit!?" And since I was parked nearby I was able to grab mine quickly and for the one and only time in my life I looked like the responsible adult in the room!

But then one year I grabbed a kit for something and found that somehow water had gotten in and the band-aids were ruined, the tape had mildew all over it, and the tylenol was nasty white crumbly powder. I had to re-do the whole kit!

Since then it seems every time I grab another kit I find something wrong with it. I carefully repack things, I use ziploc bags to help keep things dry, but all that does is slow-down the natural degradation.

Bottom line, I suspect a lot of people are like me: the buy a kit, check that off the list, and walk away with a good feeling of confidence that you are now responsibly prepared.

But the reality is that when you buy a kit you take on regular - at least yearly - maintenance work that has to be done, just like changing your engine oil or cleaning your gun.
 
Callee: that's basically it!! Lol. I had been lugging this kit for so many years...thank I never actually needed it.

Yomamma: what is in a army field dressing kit exactly?
 
Generally in my personal work kit I have the following, probably overboard as we have lvl1 & lvl3 first aid kits on site but a lot of the time we’re not right at the trucks. My smaller hunting kit is a scaled down version of my work kit. Mainly tq, bandaids/gauge, pressure bandage or two, triangle bandage and some medical tape, quick clot, combat gauze.

Shears
Med tape
Sterile non stick gauze pads
Butterfly stiches
Tourniquet’s 2
Emergency blanket
Triangle bandage
BZK wipes
Couple pairs of nitrile gloves

I carry mainly “bandaids” a few gauze, and tape! Some ibuprofen and acetaminophen!
 
I have two, a small one that goes on day trips, and a more extensive one for longer forays.

In the small one:

Steristrips, for butterflying closed cuts.
Quickclot bandage, ( I've use that a couple of times, along with the steristrips.)
A few packs of bandaids, some straight, and some of the H- or hourglass type.
A small tube of polysporin
Half a dozen small packs of antibiotic ointment.
A small pair of needle-point tweezers,
A small foreceps.
A few small safety pins, and one big one
A "Swiss Card" that contains a magnifier, a small blade, another tweezers, a pin for digging out slivers. and a small pair of scissors.
Some aspirin and some Toradol. ( I'm allergic to tylenol)
A spool of dental floss.

This all fits into a small aluminum tin with a locking watertight lid. Intended to deal with minor cuts, slivers and burns; it won't help if you slice open an artery.

I'm particularly curious as to the uses of dental floss?! Is it just normal use or there is some unknown utility to dental floss that I am not aware of?

Some additional stuff that's good to have:

Tylenol with codeine for serious injuries.

Diphenhydramine for bad insect bites and stings.

Mini vial of oil of cloves in case of sudden tooth pain.

CPR mouth dam.

A mini Bic lighter because you can never have too many lighters.

Water purification tablets.

Outside the kit, a good shemaugh because they have countless uses.

That's a lot of stuff you're carrying around. In the truck or on the quad I have a small-ish IFAK - stuff to treat a penetrating wound and control bleeding plus a SAM splint and a triangular bandage. In my pocket I just have tape and a dressing, maybe a couple band aids. As for the polysporin, tylenol, etc etc - none of it is necessary in the field so I leave it at home, where I would go to properly clean and dress a wound. In the field, the stuff I have is just enough to get me home.

Mostly just the intended use, if you get something jammed between your teeth. There's a trick to removing an imbedded fish hook using a piece of thread, so that's one possible alternative.

I've heard it suggested that it can be used for emergency sutures, but that's way beyond my skill level.
 
Here’s something most probably don’t think about. Burn cream. I’m not a big drinker, but some guys are and wood stoves can bite a little.
