what's in your gear bag?

I like to Pack a bag of mini o Henry bars,quick energy when walking,comfort food when lost,fun food when sitting on your ass in a tree!
 
I may have overlook it, but did anyone mention a good seat. I use a closed-foam seat in case it rains or I sit on snow. A warm comfy seat will allow a longer stay with less movement. A wet arse is not fun and if you walk a lot, it's nice to take a break.

not to make a joke, but a roll of T-paper in a plastic bag is in my hunting bag, every time out! I double check before leaving. Bears do it in the bush and so does this hunter, sometimes, but not by choice! :(
 
TP good- makes you stink less, and helps start fire if need be.

I like to wrap everything in my survival kit in tissue/TP, and pack any extra space with cotton. I also wrap everything in plastic bags when I go hiking- no need for everything to get wet just because you need one thing out of your kit.
 
My stand is only a half mile from camp, and there are atleast 4 other hunters from my camp within radio distance, so I don't carry as much as I would if I was in the back country by myself, but I always have in my pack the following items:

hand sanitizer, latex gloves
tp
snack goodies
extra balaclava (If I'm in the stand, I get cold pretty easy in my neck/head area)
extra gloves
small first aid kit
ceramic knife sharpener
marking tape
mini saw
leatherman crunch
flashlight and knife
150' of camp cord from dollarama (best cord I've ever used)

If I was hunting away from camp/on my own/what have you, I would also have a space blanket, another length of rope, 2 6x8' tarps, firesteel with vaseline/cotton balls, medium first aid kit, my gerber hatchet and petzl headlamp. None of which add that much more weight to my pack.
 
One area I hunt is a 10km hike in...so my camp is on my back. Essentials for carrying on me while hunting are (in no particular order):

1) a couple extra rounds of ammo
2) multi-tool
3) folding knife
4) small snack food
5) TP!!!
6) hand sanitizer (along with the TP fantastic for starting fires)
7) small map of the area and a compass!!!
8) spare batteries for the GPS
9) Flint

That is my bare minimum...I usually hunt alone, so even if I am only 1km from the truck, there are plenty of SHTF scenarios that could have me spending the night in the bush. all of this fits into a small fanny pack that is on me 100% of the time while hunting.
 
I always carry binoculars, mine are bushnells. I think the bino harness/straps are well worth the money too, to keep your binos from swinging and also takes the weight off of your neck.

Instead of a hatchet I carry a kukuri knife that I bought in nepal. Lighter than a hatchet, but also more usefull since its got a longer blade, google it, their a great tool!

I always pack in a few iodine tablets and also some vitamin C tablets too. I hunt a lot in the mountains well away from town. I hate the taste of iodine, but the vitamin c tablets take away the bad taste and make it actually pleasant!

I also always have a bunch of zap straps. Ive used them to fix broken straps and peices on my backpack and coat before.

Duct tape is always a good item to take too.

Aside from the binoculars none of these things weigh much, so wont break your back.

You probably dont need all of that stuff if you hunt mostly in farmland, but never know when you may.

Those of you who are huge hatchet proponents; what are you using it for?

I ask because I used to use a hatchet around camp for various tasks but I have replaced it with a 13" "rough use knife" and I much prefer it. It is much lighter and more versatile, IMO, and for splitting wood ("batoning") I find it is much safer and easier than a hatchet. For logs that are too big for batoning, a full-sized axe is the way to go...

Since switching, I still haven't found anything that a hatchet does better. On the other hand, I know there are people here who have longer, broader experience in the woods so I'd like to hear from them on why they would choose a hatchet over a rough use knife.
 
Great topic, I've always thought my pack was complete but I've come across a few new things to add by reading.

Here is my addition to the topic: krazy glue. Throw it in the first aid kit. For a deep cut it works great for liquid stitching.

gah!! that stuff always makes me worry. I have used it on wounds before, but I always wondered about what's seeping into my skin when I do- I'm a steri-strip fan myself.
