Hey Ho.

Guys recently a mate bought a box of Supreme Elite xp3s in 150gr, I didnt want to use them exclusively so what ive decided to do for that Rifle only is load the first shot a XP3, followed by 2 Corelokt factorys (3 shot box) for follow up shots.

Now I have heard of hunters doing very similar, but say with a Hard projectile first up, followed by standards, Does anyone else actually do this or a varient of this?
In my way of thinking, i'l be able to make a $67 Box of ammo last a little bit longer, for the important first shot and if the animal takes the heat i can use SPs to end the deal.

Both ammos seem to hit very similar POI from my limited testing.

Cheers for the info

I know ammo can be pricey but using different ammo that "seems to have the same POI" could lead to issues. Every gun has ammo it likes and dislikes. Once you have found something that gives you consistent groups I would then try out the ammo at longer ranges to see if it holds up. You get to learn how the gun reacts at different ranges and when you hunt you can shoot confidently. Having different ammo in the mag throws it all out the window.

If your typical range for hunting is 150 yrds or less you probably won't have issues but longer shots need consistent ammo that behaves predictably. I solved the cost issue by getting into reloading years ago. Maybe just sight in and practice with cheaper ammo. The regular stuff can kill just as effectively as the high priced supreme super bionic bullet stuff.

Very true powdergun, although i recoeved thos box of premiums after i lent the rifle out, I will report back over the next few weeks as i have a few orders for Hinds for meat, so il be giving it a whirl.

Its dead on with Corelokt factorys, an the Supremes are in the same ball park and shots are generally under 100 an i would take a shot out to around 300 but thats pretty rarely. so lets say under 200 generally.

If range is a bit out there i will spit the round out prior to firing, which also happens if a fallow deer pops in, more so for Sambar deers, where the first shot needs to count an do the damage, follow up shots are rare as thr bush is thick but after tracking sometimes a shot or two is needed on a wounded beast.

thanks for your input

When I am hunting, the same load will be in the chamber, and in the magazine. To me, if a second shot is required for some reason, it becomes just as important as the first shot.

I've carried a soft in the barrel and a magazine full of solids a fair bit. That had nothing to economy, its a compromise between first shot and follow ups for buffalo hunting. Not everyone subscribes to that method on buffalo, but the same system starts making sense again when buffalo hunting in an elephant area.

I have some .338 FTXs loaded for my 33 Winchester that I load in the chamber. I load Hornady flat nose ammo for in the magazine. The flat nose bullets are discontinued and are precious but feed beautifully and the FTXs shoot well but don't feed through the action of the 1886 properly. Point of impact at 100 yards is pretty darn close. For the rest of my rifles, I run one load.

To me seems that you are lucky enough to get a first shot and a second shot is necessary, the cost of one additional bullet would be insignificant to the total cost of your hunt.

I tend to not wish to confuse myself.
What's in the barrel is in the mag and in my pocket/belt.
Unless we are talking shotgun.
Then a slug are on the end of the belt, both sides.
Hence the not confusing myself.

I don't mind, I live 15 minutes from prime sambar country so if things go pear shaped in the hunt, weather/gear/health/miss I just gather an walk out, back home an get things sorted for a day or two an go again.

I've got the gear now an most of my money goes on Ammo these days, I reload for a .35w an a lever cart'ge but generally use a SP factory load in WSM & 270w, the latter was fed premium Win supreme ABs most its life.

I will be spewing if I happen to miss a decent stag in the next coming weeks but for now im aiming for hinds to test the XP3s performance + a meat order.

Off topic for a moment but a while back I asked weather or not adjusting a slanted scope to true vertical an weather it would adjust POI, well I moved my scope a few Degrees to the Right, an my POI was 3 inches Right of the Centre target.
Answered my own Question,

cheers

Two NAB's in the magazine and one in the chamber. I practice the KISS theory while hunting and for everything else.

I tested for accuracy an poi again today, there is deffinatley no problem in accuracy, although the xp3s hit 3 x 3 inch Lft/Hi so going back to KISS method. Box of corelokts.

not close enough for longer shots.

cheers

Yes, For me, what's in the chamber is also in the magazine.
Only rarely would I carry two different loads for the same rifle on a hunting trip.

I shoot only premium bullets at game these days.
The cost is negligible, the peace of mind.....priceless! lol

Regards, Eagleye.

I was always taught that ammo was the cheapest part of the hunt, and not to skimp.
