So I'm trying to put things together and here's what I've come up with so far (each visit I seem to forget SOMETHING):

  • Muffs (+spare set for guests)
  • Goggles (+spare set for guests)
  • Targets
  • Stapler (and extra staples) -- That's one gun I'm allowed to handle when others are down-range ;)
  • Binoculars

Anything else I should have?

On a serious note, if I can be serious for one second :D

I have in my bag:

copies of my registration certificates
4 sets of ear protection
Stapler and enough staples to last awhile
Targets
water (guy gets thirsty you know)
Shooting glasses
memo pad and pen (in case i forget something and need to write it down, or have to report somebody for illegal entrance into our range)

I do have another lockable box that I keep my ammo in as well as the bolts from my rifles (bolt action)

Pistol case (locked)
Rifle case if im inclined to carry them out. If to many then i just use gun locks, no bolts in.

I like to include eyeglass cleaner for shooting glasses and goggles.

The VZ-58 and Norc M-14 will spit oil on your glasses of they're lubed too much.

Right now, sitting in my Uncle Mikes, is (dual duty of range and hunting):

-Two pairs of muffs
-Two pairs of gogs
-Chokes & wrench
-Two printed copies of the "storage, display, transport & handling by individuals" sheet to share with any mis-informed law enforcement.
-Copy of the 2008 Ontario hunting regs.
-headlamp led flashlight.
-duck calls
-small buck knife (for field cleaning game)
-boresnake
-small can of CLP
-patches
-bug spray
-garbage bag
-disposable gloves
-room for ~100 rounds of three inch 12 guage.

multi-tip screwdriver,,marker,,allen wrenches(small ones,,for those darn set screws on scope mount's and adjustments),,mosquito repellant,(warmer weather),,ballistic information on the ammunition I am shooting,spotting scope..registration certificates for gun's being used,,pal card,,,hunting card,,(just in case I see something in season)

I have garbage bags too, but for a much more selfish reason. They're for covering my bag in the rain.

I think it depends where you're going and what you're doing. At an unimproved range out in the back beyond, I'd probably take more than I would to a range in the city or to a match. I'm a match shooter, so I can only offer advice from that perspective.

I see two kinds of bag setups at most matches I go to. Minimalists, and kitchen-sinkers. Some people have little carts that they pull their bags around on, I #### you not.

I take ears, eyes, lube, a few basic tools and cleaning supplies. A small rag and mag brush. Gloves, pens, a notebook, and all my reg certs. IPSC rulebook and RO overlays. Ammo as required.

One thing to think about when you're shopping for range bags is that a bigger bag holds more #### and gets really heavy really fast. If you limit yourself to a mid size or smaller bag, you won't be hauling as much weight.

the complete and total s**t

In defence of the the cart dragging folks;

I have only just this year come to the pleasurable pastime of "longer" range shooting AND I wish that I had a cart. And be assured that I will have one for next season. There is a terrible amount of stuff to bring to the range and I [like many others so occupied who are past age 29] have discovered that graviational forces increase as one ages. Hence the need for cartage.

And as those with carts tend to be well prepared and remember when they were neopyhtes -they are usually willing and able to lend and equipment along with the requisite advice to the youngsters at the range.

enjoy your time at the range

I'd add some first-aid materials to your bag as well. Didn't notice anyone mention it so far. I keep the basics for cuts and scrapes, bottled water, band-aids, tweezers, antiseptic etc.

I find it prudent to keep nitrile gloves, roller bandage, israeli bandage, epi-pen, C.A.T. tourniquet and some qwik-clot in another pouch that is removable from the side of my range bag. It is what I consider the bare minimum I want to have around should someone have an ND that goes bad.
