First off, I know nothing about reloading and reloading equipment but would like to get into loading my own shells.

Situation:

A coworker of mine used to reload and still owns all his reloading equipment and books. He's looking to get rid of it all. He told me he, "would like to get around $1,000.00 for everything"

According to him, he has a Hornaday multi-stage press (if I'm using the correct terminology here) and all the assorted items needed to reload.

So basically I'm wondering if this sounds like a reasonable price?

I've asked him for a complete list of "everything" (So I could post it here and ask the same question....lol) but he won't do it as everything is still packed away in boxes from when he moved here some 5 or so years back.

I ask because I see no point in wasting my time if he's asking too much $$$ for the equipment.

So, what do folks with experience think......is it worth my time to go out there and make him go through every box with me and make a complete list of everything and then make him an offer.........or should I just say, "thanks but no thanks" and keep looking on EE here, and at gun/sporting goods stores/auctions for equipment.

TIA.

You never know could be a gold mine, could be junk. One things for sure if he never makes a list he'll never sell any of it. I your interesested I'd make him break out the boxes.

You really need to know what he has. Ask questions like how many sets of dies are there (to load more than one calibre). Does he have assessories like scales, brass tumbler etc. I have been looking at getting into reloading and I am looking at around $1000 for everything new just to give you and idea so his price is probably high. And I have been pricing Dillon equipment which is one of the pricier setups.

Personally, if I have $1000.00 budget, I will not buy a used equipment. You should buy a brand spanking new Dillon XL650 worth $600.00 (give or take) or a Dillon RL550 for ($400.00) and spend the rest of the money for whatever set of die you will need ($100.00), electronic scale ($150.00), electronic caliper ($50.00) and other stuff. You should be able to get an excellent brand new set up for $1000.00 budget and avoid headache from an old press.

Just my 2-cents

Seems kinda high. If he has so much gear that it is a good deal it is unlikley to be all gear you can use.

As a beginer, I sugest you start with a single stage press. An electronic scales would be a good luxury you would never regret. I just bought a RCBS Chargemaster and like it very much for loading match ammo.

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I'll have to break down and drive myself out to his acreage and bug him into going through all the boxes and making a complete list.

I figure if I have a list I can look up the price on all the parts new and then make him a reasonable offer. Barring that, I'll just start slow by purchasing new equipment.
