What's keeping you out of Service Rifle?

Simple question for those waiting on the bench. What is keeping more gunnies from getting into SR/ CQB matches etc.?

Is it cost? Time? Lack of training specific to the sport? Lack of access to gallery ranges for practice?

Also, what can we do as current shooters to entice more tyros onto the range?

Time.

I shot 3x matches this year plus a clinic, only thing that kept me from shooting more was time.

Not sure how to get more people to join the ORA and attend the SR matches, depends on what is holding them back.

If it's cost or time holding them back, that's a tough one, can't really help there.

If they don't know exactly how to get started, there's this CGN forum. Perhaps we need a colorful/detailed "how to get started" sticky?

If the intimidation factor is keeping new shooters from committing to their first match (I admit I was nervous driving to my first match...but it dissolved quickly :)) we could organize an buddy/mentor program here on CGN. Experienced shooters could sign on as available. New shooters could contact them via private message/email, buddy up and ask all the questions they may not want to ask here. Taking it a step further, you could buddy up with shooters who are registered for the same match the tyro plans to attend, and maybe the match director could accommodate the buddy system when organizing the relays so the tyro/mentor were on the same target. There's not a lot of free time (see: any) during Tim's matches, but you'd end up in the butts together at some point.

Are there shooters at your local club who might be interested? Offer to pay their entry fee for a SR clinic...all it takes is one trip to the Borden range and they will be hooked.

I would love to but just as it looks like my schedule is clear, something else jumps up. This summer it was getting away to the lake every weekend.

Time is the always the villain.

No SR in Alberta. I shoot the BCRA SR Provincials every year though. Time and money are no problem for me, but I'd like to shoot more! I have an extra rifle and pistol that I would be happy to lend out!

Mauser, I like the buddy up idea. That could work. I don't know what I'll have for free time, but if my employment situation goes the way I hope for next year, I'll put my name in for SR. Then I'll need a buddy for CQB, haha.

DILLIGAF, are you a work every weekend kind of guy? There are a few of us on the island working towards getting ammo at affordable rates for SR matches. I'd be happy to drive you to Nanaimo in the Spring when SR starts up again.

Time? For me, I would say I could make time if I really wanted to, but it’s not easy with 1.5 jobs, and a screaming 10 month old, my wife who needs help with the kid, and an elderly father at home.

Money? Well, I don’t make very much money to pay for what I have as it is, let alone go out and shoot in competitions, so money can be a big constraint. But then again I’ve never been in a threesome before and if the day were to come, I’d make it work.

For me, what’s keeping me from playing is mainly lack of skills I guess? I went last year with my unit and was eliminated at the Blair shoot. It was fun and I learned a lot, but they didn’t ask me to try out again, haha!

We had a match in PEI and will have another the summer of 2016. 200, 300 and 500 yard events we need more shooters but it was our first match in many years.

Kids !!!

Which is like answering : time and money.

Also being in the CAF, its less appealing with all the restrictions (magazines, paperwork) and the ammo is free when we do it at work with unmolested equipement ;)

I still try to attend once a year for 3guns or a pistol event.

im located in northern new brunswick..............no matches that i know of within a 2 or 3 hr drive of home ...............also time limits doesnt help............ANY S.R in new brunswick ??

This stuff needs better exposure. I have no idea when anything happens, no idea how to get involved. Ect ect

Also my sks doesn't have detachable mags which appears to be a problem from my quick look at what service rifle is - i didn't even know it was it's own discipline and not just a class of something else.
